Lure Retriever Question

I saw a retriever at the banquet that was a large weight with a rope attached. I've seen a similar retriver on another website and I think this would work for me more than the Frabill one because I have such a small boat. What is the theory behind this thing? I'm having a hard time understanding how it works.

The retriever follows your line down to the bait (the wire guide on the right follows your line) , and either knocks the bait loose because the retriever's so heavy, or grabs onto it with its dulled hooks, or the lure's hooks get snagged by the chain on the retriever, and then you pull the retriever back up using the heavy cord it has attached to it. Somtimes you end up pulling up the snag, too.

I HAD something similar to that, it ended up in a lake somewhere in Michigan this past season. I've used the pole style retreivers and think they work much better, I would put up with the extra size IMO, but this one does look better than the one I tossed after I lost a $20 slammer.

I've used a golf ball retriever for about 8 years now...works sweet! Mine is old school and collapses to 5', extends to 20' - and unlike the new ones it has an aluminum loop on the end that is not closed (meaning that you can hook it on your line and follow it down to your lure easily).

The older plastic-free ones like I have are common garage sale items - I think I paid 2 bucks. There are several newer ones out there now, but if you're crafty I'd suggest modifying the end -

Unfortunately, I am the type that if I can build one I want to try. I tie my own leaders, make my own bucktails, built my bumpboard and am in the process of building a bait storage box out of Sintra. As easy as it would be to just buy one, I'm a slave to my need to build so I'll be heading to TSC tomorrow to buy parts to make my own.

Well I went and bought my supplies this morning and had it put together in a matter of 5 minutes. Roughly cost me $20-$25 for the parts and there was no welding. I'll try to get a pic up sometime today.

Thanks. I ended up attaching the free end of the rope to a hole I put in the bottom of a plastic coffee can and looped the rope in the bottom and put the weight on top. Worked out pretty good.

Looks cool JT, I like it! How much weight do you think that caribeaner can pull up? can't tell if that is an actual weight-bearing kind, or one of the flimsy key chain kind? good job!

It's one of the keychain kind and I think they are rated to about 90#. I would hope that's enough.

Replace that carabiner with one of these:



About $7 at West Marine for a SS one with a 450 lb breaking strength, or a galvanized one for $3.50 with a 1980 lb strength.

Ahh the ol quick link those things are great, use them for trapping in a little smaller size and they hold coyotes in legholds great, so they are very tough.
