I've been dying to get to my favorite steelhead river since ice up and it didn't dissapoint. Fished from daylight until 11:00 in the snow with turkeys in the woods and an eagle overhead (a far cry from downtown GR). Even without any fish it would have been a great morning on the river.

The river is running a little high for winter but still very clear. Ended the morning with four steelhead and one 20" brown, all released so I can catch them again.

Will do you let them go because it is so hard to keep bait alive until the opener ? 😈 😈

LOL! Can you imagine how a steelhead would act on a QS rig? How far out of the water would they go when mrs piggy takes a whiff?

The best part would be if it doesn't get chewed on it can be saved for dinner.

I should change my screen name to "Trout4Bait".

I have a 12" Talonz Deep Threat in Lake Trout pattern and it is sweet! It is a heavy bait to troll but runs great and gets deep. I trolled it on Crow Lake in Ontario but should have given it more time. Kingfisher makes a sweet bait, just invest in the road and reel and line to handle these big baits.

Good point Tom, the big baits need different tackle for sure.

Big baits require big sticks.

Don't think your casting gear can stand up to the abuse of these lures. My choice of tackle would be a heavy rod and big trolling reel filled with 150 lb. PowerPro and topped off with a 150-200 lb. flouro leader.

Wow, thats Hr Johnnys big three ha ha ha . My 21" Laker at the top 15" smoked fish in the middle and the 12" Dirty Perch. Johnny pulls them with some heavy stuff including one rod rigged with wire. The 12" pulls well with a 7 foot Heavy action Tiger rod from Shakespere. I use a new Okuma Convector spooled with 60 lb Triline big game with 130 lb Florocarbon. The 12 only has 7/0 hooks so 60 lb mono will work fine. The 15 needs quite bit more like what Will was saying 150 braid and 200 wire . The 21" will pull the transom off a Tiara he he he . Need Tuna gear heavy salt water rod (boat style with rollers) 200 lb Braid or wire with matching steel. Terminal tackle needs to be very tough as everything is got a lot strain on it even before miss piggy hits it. 4 guys are pulling the 21's besides Johnny and all are using Tuna or Halibut rods. The 21 has been up to 5mph so far . I dont even fish my 15,s or the 21. But I just made 14- 12 inchers for My Wife and I. I finally got a bunch for us Wink Wink . 😀 😀 . Im donating two new ones for the auction at the banquet. Kingfisher
