As I read, more than once I wondered whether Perry didn't have fish setting up in deep-water sanctuaries that were too deep, below the thermocline. I don't have the book in front of me now, but as I recall, sometimes he had them setting up really deep, at fifty feet down or more, in lakes that didn't seem to be hundreds of feet deep. Are such claims generally reasonable?
Thanks.
50, 60, 70, 80… The only question that would need to be answered – Is enough oxygen below the thermocline? In general the answer is YES if the oxygen is there the fish will go there.
A couple things that need to be asked:
– How deep do they need to go to reach "sanctuary"?
– Are we talking about a species that likes to suspend?

Is it fair to respond to a question with a question?
Absolutely!!

Is the major factor in how deep they have to go to find santuary the clarity of the water?
Clarity will have a direct impact on light penetration so certainly will help dictate sanctuary depth. The reasons they go to sanctuary areas will also determine how deep they go.
Fish aren't going to go to their sacntuary depth everyday, they might only migrate part way there or maybe they never leave the shallow water. We need to determine where they are (deep, shallow or inbetween). We should always start shallow and fish the best structure intelligently. Throwing a bait over the side and driving around haphazardly isn't going to put big fish in the boat consistently.
