All on flies, and the fish were biting yesterday. Kevin gave me a bunch of nice Muskie flies he tied at a show in MN last month so I am itching to go Muskie fishing.

I attribute my great day to Kevin, and the lucky Muskie hat I was wearing(got from the banquet).

Thanks Will, he is a nice guy and just had a local boat builder make a nice custom boat for him-did a great job and I was one of the first guys in it.

He did mention that you were a fishing guru (my words) and said to say Hi.

He said to say hi to his muskie friends in the group as well, and of course, I being bad with names have forgotten them already.

Ummm, I'd love to, but…. here's how that would go:

Me: I want to hire a fishing guide.

Wife: WHAT!?!?! We've spent THOUSANDS on boats and rods and reels and other crap, and now you want to PAY somebody else to take you fishing in their boat? We have one kid starting college in the Fall and the older one with still another semester to go!

Me: Embarassed Uh…yes?

Wife: {megaton-class explosion}

Me: [smilie=dead.gif]

Maybe we can talk Kevin into donating a trip for the 2010 banquet!

Then again… you might not want to try steelhead. You might give up on muskies completely. Especially if he's got you swinging a spey fly and a 15# buck slams it and about rips the rod out of your hands…

Laugh-or you could do what I did- take your wife with you so she can enjoy the beauty of the river, and have her out fish you like I did. My trip was a christmas present so to say.

Kim caught a few nice 6 pd Walleye, and of course had to release them(out of season).

or you can look at this way, its not a bad way to go

Funny you mention that-I had a fresh angry 10#'r run upriver so violently I asked Kevin if he ever lost a rod that way, and he said "yes – 3" so apparently it happens…

But I dont know…seeing these small/medium/huge Muskie charging baits is what its all about as far as I am concerned…

That's true but each have their nuances that make you love them. Like when a dropback steelhead eats your stone or caddis off the surface. That is equal to catching a 50"er on a figure eight IMO!

I got the steelhead bug bad about 13 years ago then quit altogether about 2 years ago to concentrate exclusively on the REAL fish of freshwater, the almighty, and all life consuming, Muskie. We used to get fall run egg eaters on the North Shore of Lake Michigan into the low 20 lb. class, which were almost impossible to land on my 12 footer and 6 pound flouro tippet. Almost! Very cool. And very nice pics, BTW! Love those football shaped, Manistee strain fish. What I really miss, though are the Skamania that they've since stopped planting. Imagine sight fishing a 15 lb. plus, fresh run chromer, smacking your #10 black bug in 58 degree water in late June. The warm water was like a steroid and adrenaline shot for the rainbows. Those were REAL battles, but those days are now long gone……….

I can imagine, after seeing that ~45" muskie streak just past my lure at about 30 mph last year on St. Clair… I think it could have pulled me off my feet!

There really isnt a fish called a Skamania. They are Steelhead that were brought in from several rivers on the west coast. The Siletz and Skamania were two of the strains. I caught many of the smaller siletz on the White River years ago. They are called Summer run Steelhead by most trout fishermen. They got nicknamed Skamania because those were the biggest ones stocked here and in Indiana waters. I heard stories of guys fly fishing for them on the scum(bug) line 15 miles out in Lake Michigan. I only had one on and lost it in June years ago on a small spinner. I almost got spooled and the hooks pulled out. They were pure acrobats and would run like rockets were tied to thier butts. I dont know why the program died. Mike

Exactly Tom 😯 I had a very large one on the 15th do that to me and I am still laughing about it because there is no doubt in my mind that a 20lb fish at 30 mph has a great chance at ripping the rod out of my hand while I enjoy the sunshine and the bikini's 😀

If we are going to get technical… we don't even have steelhead, we have lake run rainbow trout. Summer run rainbows and summer run salmon are cool critters even if they aren't supposed to be swimming in our waters.

None of these pacific trout and salmon belong here anyway… Can't we divert all that money to rebuilding muskellunge and sturgeon populations? Then again, I guess I don't have any Patowatomi blood in me so I better be careful that I point my finger in the mirror too…
