Michelle and I hit one of our favorite Musky lakes in the Yooper land for 5 days. Tan perch little Claw and a 38 incher and Michelles 40 inch Bucktail fish. We got 6 Muskies from 31 to 40 inches and lost three nice ones in the 45/47 inch range and saw one real big fish. Then we saw this very big bear . We were very close and he didnt even know we were there until he looked up and turned around and went back into the woods. Mike and Michelle "><url url="[Permission to view this media is denied]

Cool pics, but I gotta say one thing… being the Grandson of an avid bear hunter, and having shot and filmed people shooting them, I can say with certainty that that is a juvenile bear. Very cool to see one up close like that none-the-less. We have a lot of bears, yet you rarely see them or get close to them. Was it fishing along side of you?
Good seeing you out there. Did you see a lot of other boats on the water like we did the Friday evening that I saw you?

Hi John, no it quieted down and we had the lakes and rivers to our selves after friday. If that bear was a juvenile an adult must be very big indeed. This one was bigger than me and I weigh over 200 lbs. How big do they get? We got to whithin 30 feet of him and he didnt even know we were there. Our little dog Fisher Price barked at him and gave up the game. He headed back into the brush. Ill Pm you. Mike and Michelle

Mike,
John is right on that bear, it is definitely a young adult and I can just about guarantee you it doesnt weigh over 200 lbs. Bears are some of the most difficult animals there are to judge the size of, and with nothing next to it to compare it to, they all look big. A large bear will have a large head that makes its ears look small and less prominent, it will also have a large belly making it appear to be short legged. Leggy lean bears with protruding ears are small young bears.
To give you a little more perspective on judging animal size without a nearby object to compare to, did you know an average size man can straddle a large buck deer. Most people when telling about the huge deer they saw hold there hand shoulder high, which would be more the size of a horse. Wink

Yup, that's right on kmur. Bears are very tough to judge. I would say that this bear is under 150. Even the guys I know that live for bear hunting are lucky to guess within 50 lbs on a really large boar. Many people shoot really small bears because they misjudge them. We have bears checked in up here that are under 100 lbs quite often. The hunter will usually say they thought the bear was at least 200 lbs or they just didn't care and were planning on shooting the first bear they saw. Bears can get over 500 lbs in Michigan. When they start getting over 300 it's a guessing game for me. I got a tag this year, so hopefully this fall I'll have some pictures of a bear that I couldn't guess the weight on!

I dont doubt he was a young one. His hair was completely wet as he had just swam the bay on the other side of the point. He was definately bigger than me. longer and taller in a 4 point stance. The picture really doesnt do his size justice. you had to be there 30 feet away. Ive shot deer that were 145 and he was much bigger then they were. I doubt he was over 200 lbs but I still would say he was closer to 200 than 150. He will be a lot heavier by winter . Put it this way , I wasnt about to jump out of the boat and try measuring him ha ha ha ha . We turned him away from entering the campgrounds and scaring the crap out of two women who were sunbathing on the shore behind us. They thanked us afterwards. Then two people went after it with Kayacs trying to get more pictures. Not too smart in my book. Mike and Michelle
