Ya we do get in the way(my self included) but what a learning
process. This is the 2nd time I brought my girls. Ya cant teach
this stuff on a drawing board very well. I actually thought it would
make for a cool field trip. When I tell people about this process, and big
muskies in general, some look at me like im in story land. We must keep the kids and general public involved and aware. I guess its the E in PRE.
I hope they NEVER close this off to the public(unless the fish/nets get
vandalized repeatedly) Then some different steps may be required.
Lets hope that day never comes.

[quote="Jim tenHaaf"]Why is the guy in the last pic using a towel? Isn't that removing a heavy amount of protective slime?

That is Matt Hughes. When milking a female you need something to hold them with or you would be dropping them on the ground multiple times when stripping eggs – the towel helps. He also needs to remove slime from her so it doesn't run into the eggs and ruin the collection. Sure it removes slime but it is restored quickly and isn't as important in cold water compared to 70+ degree water. She'll be fine.

These girls go through some tough stuff during this process but they are also providing the eggs that will stock every other lake in Michigan.

I thought that looked like Matt. That's what I kind of figured with the towel. Helps keep a grip on them.

Thanks for the additional pics, Jason and Bill!

Is it just the pictures or just me, but it seem's like these fish are out of the water a long time? Steve

I thought that they put the fish in a salt water type solution to help with them to regain there slime before they put them back is that wat they did?

Steve,

They were out for several minutes but they ensured the fish were revived before they released them-they swam off fine from what I could see.

The fish are very sedated.Their entire body functions slow way down.Combine that with cool recovery water and they seem to
do just fine.I guess I wouldnt be suprised if there is a certain
percentage of delayed mortality.(Im not saying there is) but
it is a wild ride for the fish.

* No saltwater solution that I know of. When they are done with
the fish they go right back out to a recovery pen in the lake.A
DNR person is right there to keep them up right and monitor
the recovery. When the DNR person deems the fish ready to
be released, away they go. Sometimes the fish are a little
groggy still and may swim in a big circle up on the surface
for a few seconds.Ive seen that many times.
