So you have an idea of the sizes on the fish, those tubs are 48" long.

Brad, I took the girls with me on Tuesday morning(spring break).
They do this at the Charleton Park swim area now. More room
for everybody(had to use the north gate entrance).
Last I knew Matt said they will be back Thurs to process and sample
some fish but they were good on the egg count. Im not going Thurs
because I think there is a MMA meeting I might want to go to.Doing
both would be a killa on the gas tank. You going to Lansing??

PS-keep in mind the longest fish I didnt even see that day. It wasnt
as fat as the 46 but was around 50 from what Craig and them were
saying. I wished I could have taken a vid of that fish smacking that
guy with its tail.I dont think Ive seen this DNR person before, maybe
new to muskies?? You could hear the slaps to his face and shoulder
and it dang near knocked him off balance.Dan Ansen and me were
yukin it up—-smack!!,smack!!, slap!!,…..welcome to the party pal!!

It really sucks that I couldn't be there and won't be able to make it tomorrow. Looks like a great time. Thanks to all that were able to help out. I'll have to start fishing there more.

Could be the same fish, neither one had been netted/tagged before.

Why is the guy in the last pic using a towel? Isn't that removing a heavy amount of protective slime?

That is Matt Hughes. When milking a female you need something to hold them with or you would be dropping them on the ground multiple times when stripping eggs – the towel helps. He also needs to remove slime from her so it doesn't run into the eggs and ruin the collection. Sure it removes slime but it is restored quickly and isn't as important in cold water compared to 70+ degree water. She'll be fine.

These girls go through some tough stuff during this process but they are also providing the eggs that will stock every other lake in Michigan.

Thanks for the thanks guys.
Absolutly right Will. Milking these big girls isnt so EZ at times either.
I saw one just start running out eggs with no effort but another needed
constant stroking(just like the kid). It takes a little elbow grease. Those
fish are darn near all muscle, plus its cold.
That fat 46 looked to me to have had a fin clip before but no tag
number popped up. ???
They also ran the fish through an iodine bath(I think thats what it was)
before milking.Only for a few seconds. The third tub before milking
had some water that they brought with them.I have no idea what
that was??

They go from the holding pen in the water into the sedative (tub 1). Then into the iodine solution (tub 2) then into a rinse (tub 3).

The sedative doesn't completely knock them out. A nice sleepy big female will still try to get away from you and when they get leverage on you it's nearly impossible to hold them.

Just got back from there and got some good video footage of this and the rest of the process. I will edit it this weekend and post the entire process being done on the 45" fish. After the rinse they scan the fish to get the info from the pit tag, bring the fish to get milked, and the take a blood sample. If the fish doesn't have a tag already they take a fin clipping and put a pit tag in it after the milking. They did take eggs today too but not too many. Biggest fish today were a 46" 25lbs and a 45" 23 lbs. Lot of people out there today and felt kind of bad for the DNR guys as people were always in the way trying to get pictures.

I was reallly surprised they made this as public as they did this year. In the past when Dan ran the deal it was kept low key. This was particularly true after the nets were trashed one year by vandals.

Yeah I thought they would at least have ropes or something to keep the public away. It was a little dangerous sometimes when they were getting blood samples as kids would be just a couple feet away from the fish and all the equipment. One of the fish thrashed and flipped the box of needles/test tubes right at a little boy! He was fine and no equipment broke so no harm no foul I guess haha.

Here are the pictures:
