Maiden voage for 2006 was marked by the first blown forecast for the year 🙁 . NONE of the forecasted clouds showed up until an hour before sunset… But not to dwell on the negatives- we were able to boat a 30"er on Webster, lost a decent fish (oops, that's kinda still negative), and raise a handful of fish on the Barbee in that last hour of daylight.
The first half of the day on Webster was slower than expected, was surprised to see only 44-46 degree water. The bait was high and on the breaks and the muskies were stacked also, but marked most of the hooks 20-30 down. Rasied 2 others besides the 30" including a 3 footer that looked for sure like it would snap on one of the 2 turns it followed around at the boat. But didn't. Barbee chain the 2nd half was slooow, and water just as stinkin cold for the most part. Once the sun dipped low and behind the clouds some fish did come out to play, including a couple nice ones. Unfortunately, one of those (40" +) that hit way at the end of the cast was lost just a couple feet from the net, for no real good reason in my opinion. Just one of those things. A bit of a heartbreaker at the end of a long day though.
All of the fish were in deep water until sundown when a couple were up on top of but still close to the break. Those chased shallow cranks, but all of the biters (and the 1 near biter) came twitchin deep cranks.
Great to be pitchin and crankin again though, always a good day when fishing!
