Jason,What did it cost you for the entire trip? Total cost? I'm curious??
I'm not sure the exact cost, but I know it was pretty expensive. Probably around $1000 per person. I know we could stay at other lodges for a lot cheaper, but we've always gone back to AML for the guides, the atmosphere, and just the overall experience there.
Spend the money and Hire Mike Lazarus and fish the St. Lawrence. Grahm Bristow on Georgian Bay, or Moosehorn Lodge on LAC SUEL. Those three areas have produced several of the largest Muskies ever caught. Considering the world record are we talking 58 pounds or 69. I am of the belief that late fall or very early spring is the time frame where world or state records are at the highest percentage chance of being caught. Egg mass, Fall weight are at their highest so I would target or take my shots then. Looking at the last Michigan fish (58 inches,58 pounds) caught in September all the evidence says this fish could have been heavier due to the fact that her stomach contents we just about gone. With Egg mass or a full belly she would have gone over 60 pounds. I don't recognize Spray's fish as legitimate and am kind of torn over Cal Johnson's fish. It looks like Obrien's fish has been doused so I have to believe that a 60 pound fish will be the next world Record. In Michigan waters you have the Lower Chain and Lakes Michigan , Superior and Huron. The St. Mary's River seems to be a producer of some true giants. Men Like Larry Ramsell visit this area every Year.
Now to increase your odds slightly the best way to go about this quest is to Troll as many lines as legal on Big water using medium to large lures and spending days and days and days being patient and enjoying the process. The best we have done in this quest was a 51 inch 30 plus pound fish from the lower Chain. You must understand that late fall weather can be nasty and very frustrating, cold, brutal and will test your mettle and your equipment. Early season egg fish depend totally on weather patterns opening up trophy waters before season closes or staying cold enough (delaying the spawn) until season opens the end of April. Michelle and I are taking our shots this fall on the Lower Chain and we are working out a trip with Rod Jones on the St. Mary's River. I have also been setting up a trip with Joe Flo (McComber) on the St. Lawrence. Joe has a 57 by 27 to his credit. We have been invited to fish with another one of our Pro Staff ( Grahm Bristow) On Georgian Bay. These are Michelle's and my best shots at world record class fish. Green bay is another long shot. This topic always inspires me as I believe there is a couple fish out there that are bigger then anything ever weighed. Enjoy. Mike and Michelle
