60,000 plus whatever is leftover that hasn't eaten each other. And you think only 30,000 will survive, that's not good, more minnows, more minnows and more minnows. You don't have to name any name's but will some of them be put in a new lake????

It good to see we can rebound back to the Iowa program just like that. I am impressed. No sense losing any sleep over it . Lets move forward. The Iowa fish grow big and grow fast. Hey Will , how about talking the D.N.R. into giving me about 50 of them Cool Cool Cool . I know this nice little lake——–

Just do what I did, Mike: Help move the fish from the ponds into the trucks. Before you go, fill up your boots with water, and dump a few in there! [smilie=laugh2.gif]

Is that why you walk funny Jim? Missing a few toes??

Johnny Raincloud my rear. How about a straight story. Originally the justification for ceasing the Iowa program was VHS related transportation issues mandated by Federal law and the desire to convert to a pure GLS program in Michigan thus the need to stop importing mutts into the state that can get loose into the Great Lakes. Now it is the need to free up pond space. Let's make up our mind here what the justification is/was for discontinuing the successful Iowa program. I'm all for saving Wolf Lake from itself…need I say once again I told you so that Wolf Lake can't consistently produce fish so STOP expanding the stocking list. Ok, off that soap box. Again, i'm all for salvaging the stocking year, believe me. My point is we could continue to have both the Northern program and an Iowa suplement program simultaneously which is what we did for years until the bright idea of going to a GLS program before the DNR has the funds and capacity to do so.

New lake? As far as I know there haven’t been any new lakes added to the list for a while now.

There are no GLS in the hatchery… not sure where the GLS rumor came from. Next year if all goes well there will be GLS in the hatchery.

I’ll give you the straight story if you promise to keep it straight this time since it seems to have only changed in your mind…
A couple of the biologists didn’t want to stock Iowa fish anymore and that started the shut off of the Iowa program. The concern was also for space in the hatchery with the planned GLS introduction but that was many years down the road. VHS and federal transport shutdown sealed the deal but the Iowa program was gone before that was even a concern because Wolf Lake proved they can fill the four lined ponds with spring fingerlings so there was no need to supplement.

Now, years later, there are four lined ponds that each should have no more than 15,000 spring fingerlings moved into them in the summer. If the production has no issues, there will be four full ponds and any supplement Iowa fish wouldn’t have anywhere to go. Sure maybe they could go into an earthen pond and we would see a 10% return – IMO that is a complete waste of fish. You see Iowa has to plan ahead for summer fingerlings and MI would have to commit to them well in advance.

No hatchery consistently produces muskies, they all have problems from disease to fish that don’t eat. That’s just part of the deal.

That said… the GLS program doesn’t get in the way of the current program for at least another 6-8 years. I don’t want to hear any more complaining about the GLS because it has no bearing at this point. If it starts next year it will be small scale and only enough fish to start the brood lakes which is a drop in the bucket compared to the current program.

Told me so, eh? Where were you last year Indiana lost all their fish? Did you also predict Ohio would cut all funding for their muskie program? How about all the years Iowa fish wouldn't pellet train and they lost most of their fish? Stuff happens in hatcheries it's the nature of the beast. We can sit here, bitching about this being "Johnny Raincloud" or we can be thankful that our DNR cares about this program enough to go get some fry from Iowa.

All due respect to you Will, I am grateful the DNR made quick plans to supplement and said so in my other posts. That doesn't mean I have to join the forum bandwaggon of folks throwing flowers at their feet for having yet another, in a long line, of potential yearly disasters at Wolf Lake albeit this event sounds like it was beyond their control.

Due respect to me, you never laid out the above in the past. I think you confuse what you tell us with what you know…at times this can be two different things. If you did say this on the forum or otherwise before and I missed it, my appologies. I still very much question your contention that the Iowa program was dead BEFORE the VHS issue arose. If that was the case I never heard you say that…see above for identical caveats and appologies if waranted.

As for the I told you so, excuses are like A-holes, everyone has one. 😯 I'm jokingly coming off strong. Let's just say you and I will never see eye to eye on that point. My position (personal opinion) is very strongly in favor of resisting the temptation to expand the stocking program to new lakes or lakes that have not received stockings since the Carter Administration until such time as the DNR has adequate funding to do so and Wolf Lake can CONSISTENTLY (I don't care what the reason for the failure is) meet and exceed the necessary stocking production for the lakes currently on the "list" on an annual basis.

If you want to throw names around like Johnny Rainclound that's fine but let's stick to what I believe are legitimate issues for healthy debate.

Latest news…

Our driver ended up picking up 42,600 fish. The fish were larger than anticipated and this is what we felt comfortable hauling back on our trailer.
