Come up to your lure and open their mouths like they are going to eat it. Then they just sit there with their mouth open for a few seconds and swim away. Had one do this to me today at Murray on a Sq. Burt. And he did it 2 times! The first time, he followed in, and I stopped the lure, giving it just a couple really small twitches-enough to make the tail swirl. Then after he swam away, I watched him go up into about 2 FOW. I casted out past him and a few feet over, and he did the same thing in the shallow water. He darted towards the Burt first, then stopped abruptly, opened his mouth, and actually put the lure into his mouth a little. Then, scooted off. What a tease!
typical of a lot of fish, specially after post spawn. They can be very picky depending on the situation, but we had several do this today. All the fish we had follow today were 45+ inch fish. And they were nose up on every lure, if they didn't strike it. The bigger fish seemed aggressive today, until the sun got covered up then they shut down mostly.
Not sure why they do it, but it happens just about anywhere you fish for muskies even canada.
water clarity could have a lot to do with it too. Least on murray
