We were out on munuscong bay and started a drift. We had been drifting and casting for about a half hour when a walleye boat came over and started a troll about 200 yds away. No bid deal, but after while we could see that our drift and his troll where on a collision coarse. Note, we had our gas motor and electric trolling motor up out of the water. He was trolling with his electric motor. We eventually got so close that I could of hit his planner board with my rod. At the last second he turned his trolling motor and moved about 6ft so his board wouldn't hit the front of our boat.
As luck would have it (or not) we encountered this gentleman in the bar that night. He was furious and thought it was our obligation too move because, and I quote " You should move for me because I do this for a living". Wow, I was shocked, couldn't believe I just heard that. He also said another reason we should have moved was because he was running a GPS line, like it was his water! Our defense was simple: You had a motor in the water, we didn't. Also we where there first. I hate arrogant people like that.
There was a walleye tournament that day and everybody we talked too was really nice. We actually had two other boats at the dock tell us they had an issue with him too. Should we've swallowed our pride and and moved? Kicked his butt in the bar? Sign up for AA? What would you do?
This is an easy one… Rules of the road (USCG Navigational rules) would say it was his obligation, being under power, to avoid you (not under power). If he had hit you, he would have been at fault and likely ticketed.
He is clearly not familiar with the law. Pathetic if he is a licensed captain and doesn't know, or acknowledge…

Ummm… what??
Sounds like an arrogant prick who just needs the crap kicked outta him. It sounds like too many people have let him have his way. Too many people are way too comfortable getting close to fishermen. The last time it happened to me, I chucked my Pounder at them. Would've hit the old broad sitting in the bow square in the face, but I thumbed it enough so it just splashed her. Literally landed 2' from the boat.

As Mark Twain wisely said, "Never argue with an idiot; if you do, they bring you down to their level, and then beat you with experience."
One of the idiots over on M-S.com forum uses that line.
Some of our local violators are much like the character we're talking about. Please be careful. They can be dangerous.
Looking back I don't regret not moving. But it was close too getting ugly in the bar that night. The owner had to take him outside, which was a good thing because my brother(that's whose boat we happened to be in) was ready to drop him. This guy's from the area, so he had some of his friends around him which made him act like he was important. Yeah, hes got a nice boat, with his name on the side, and it says "walleye pro". Whoopty frickn do. Brother told him for 10 $ I could get my name on my boat and we could both be somebody. He didn't like that. Plus, he's not a pro, he's an amateur, he just wants people to think he is.
We all had a few beers that night ( hence the AA comment) and that's why I didn't push the issue as hard as I normally would've. There was a lot of people in the bar, mostly walleye fisherman, and I didn't want us (musky fisherman) to get a bad rap. We have enough obstacles in our way. Talking to everybody that night and the next morning (ouch), made me feel better because his actions spoke for themselves.
I can relate my brother and I were out fishing on Saturday trolling a nice weedline about forty feet from shore. This guy behind us is running the same line in a party boat so I am thinking he will throttle up and go around us— oh no— he throttled up and shot between us and the shore right through the weedbed. It was understandable though because there was only about a half mile of unoccupied water on the other side. You cant fix stupid…
stuff like that happened frequently on murray this year..
Fishing casting distance from shore, this moron decided it would be better to pull his idiot wakeboarder between us and the shore instead of the whole rest of the lake which had no other speed boats on it. Did it prob 4 diff times that night.
Problems like this is exactly why we need to introduce more people to golf. More people on the links = less idiots on the water. Honestly though, why should he have to move if he is on fish????? I do alot of drifting while casting but, my motor is always in the water to make adjustments for contours and of course other boats. It works both ways and when you see someone in your way the easiest way to avoid conflict is to change your course slightly. Who is there to inforce to supposed laws??? I wouldn't think calling the DNR or Shefiff is going to help, sounds like a common occurence that happens everyday whether on the water or in the woods, nothing we can do about it, its more courtesy than anything. I 've had trollers this year come close and wave and the only thing I can do is keep casting and flip them the bird when they look at me with bino's, LOL.
I sure hope you and I are never in the same boat Jim! That would spell bad news for an idiot! Seriously though, something very similar happened to me out at Hudson not too long ago. My father and I were trolling our planer boards out in front of the campground and this guy comes cutting across the lake and decides to sit right in front of us and begin casting. The first time it happened I figure no big deal, we can go around. About an hour and a half later, same thing happens. This time I was coming from the other direction and I don't think the guy saw me until the last minute. He starts to do the same thing and I remain stubborn this time. The guy was literally 25 to 30 feet from running over our planer board line after cutting us off again. I shouted to him " can't you see what we're doing?" At the last second the guy throttled up and got outta the way and mumbled something loudly which I didn't hear. I was very Pi$$ed! The only thing I could think of was that maybe he raised a fish in that area earlier and didn't want us to catch it. Now I know that Hudson isn't a huge lake and running planer boards can take up a lot of space but c'mon, I was running a straight line with nobody in the way until this fool comes along. I thought I was gonna have to do something I may not be proud of if that guy started crap while I had my old man in the boat. Some people just don't have a clue. That moron probably thought the same thing about us.
On White lake we have three white Lund walleye boats with dozen plus sponsor logos all over their boats that behave exactly as BMF described on Munuscong Bay. They fish tournaments statewide are are well known as the big three aholes of White Lake area. Only one of the boats is legally running charters and he is such a bs ego salesman the DNR does not take his charter catch data reports seriously. You know how far voice sound can travel over water especially when the area is quiet with electric motors or drifting. Therefore, we hold our positions and make sure the ahole's charter customers can overhear our boat conversations about that ahole in the community dadadada….. Almost immediately his trolling tactics will go from slow to faster to get his customers out of our area for the rest of the evening. [smilie=wave.gif]
Sorry to hear about having your day ruined by someone so full of themselves!
On Austin it has become so commonplace for a tournament boat to pull downwind on a driftline that I have lost perspective of what is the norm or rule of water. To be honest, throwing a bulldawg or wabull nearby usually draws attention, and 2 fish this year have been caught near the offending parties boats… Muskies on Austin seem to chase baits running from the boats, or so I keep telling myself.
Pleasure craft rudeness was exceptionally bad this year for some reason..
Oh scratch that…..I have to edit this post. Last year I fished mostly after dark-this year has been exclusively daytime!
Just last weekend, a guy see's me boat a real nice fish and while I'm drifting, de-hooking, releasing etc… This guy rolls up to where I caught the fish, anchors and starts casting!!! I couldn't believe this guy and decided to motor back up, drive up to where I left off and fish circles around his anchored boat casting as fast as possible hoping I'd pick up a another fish right in front of him. It's amazing how little boaters know the rules of the water. Don't even get me started on some of these idiots at the boat ramp and lack of understanding or respect when it comes to proper loading and unloading!
