I would love to hear some input from everyone on this question…

What would you think if MMA became it's own organization and left Muskies, Inc? What if MMA became THE alliance of Michigan muskie clubs. Each club would then be a chapter of Michigan Muskie Alliance (Utica, Kalamazoo, GR, Midland, Novi, Traverse City, Black Lake, Newberry, etc.).

Pros, Cons, thoughts?

I hate to answer a question with a question- but why would we do that?

If all of our membership money went to Michigan it would be great. But the MI perks are kinda cool. I would think not having to have all sorts of hoops to jump thru when we are going to have a tourney or raffle would be cool. Just thoughts, WHY???

i think it would be good for Michigan muskie guys (us)

would all the money we raise or put in for membership, or organization fee's or whatever go toward stocking programs and support the michigan fishery for the future?..if yes…i think it would be good.

I think if you break up local chapters like Will said as an example, might bring guys together, bring some unity and make some good friends.
not to mention chase fish with people that share the same passion.

What perks specifically?

The consideration for this would be purely financial. More than $5000 of YOUR money goes to the international every year. Is the perk of the magazine and other member benefits worth that to you? That's all I want to know.

Im hoping this is just a poll type thing. I was a cofounder of the other club Michigan Musky Hunters. Our goal was to be a michigan only club. At first I thought this was the right way to go but now I do not believe that it is. Muskies Inc has so many cool things like the Lunge Log, tournements, national exposure(If wanted) not to mention the wealth of information from other Muskies Inc chapters around the country. I also believe we carry more clout with a national organization behind us. Memberships will rise and fall locally and without the main international club smaller clubs might be kind of forgotten. I like strength in numbers. I tried it the other way and now Im here(to stay) Kingfisher

I'm just weighing ideas about how MMA can be better. In reality, everything we've accomplished in Michigan had nothing to do with our Muskies, Inc. affiliation.

The strength in numbers argument favors affiliation with the parent organization Muskies, Inc.
I like the feeling that Muskies, Inc. has its sights on ideas that generally transcend state boundaries and are useful to all areas of the country. It just ups the ante from a local fishing club.

Doesn't WI have some local, non-Muskies Inc affiliated musky clubs? I'm pretty sure that IL still has the Illinois Muskie Alliance, where many of the Muskie Inc chapters are members. It would be interesting to get their feedback/input.

Heres my thought- MI is a great organization and we all like it. They are not doing for us what we do for them and I don't know that they ever will. For the next ten years we could put 5K toward fish??? That just makes sense. Two possible solutions.

1.) Every member write a check to the general chapter #47 fund each year for say $30.00. Before anyone even thinks of complaining remember that I buy gear too and know how much we all spend. That would generate significant revenue that could be targeted to replace the $$ we send to International.

2.) Disband as an MI chapter and rename keeping everything but the MI affiliation. Anyone wishing to continue in MI could be a member of chapter 00 and still receive all the benefits of membership.

Personally I would prefer to write the extra check and keep things status quo-

Yes, Phil and part of the reason for the question.

Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota each have alliances that have been formed. For example, the WMA in WI not Muskies, Inc. was responsible for the Great Lakes Muskie program in Green Bay. There is another alliance forming to the east of us called Eastern Muskie Alliance. This is going to be a culmination of eastern Muskies, Inc. chapters and other muskie clubs in NJ, PA, OH, KY, NY. These chapters will likely defect from Muskies, Inc. in the future. Muskies, Inc. will loose a good chunk of it's membership and the perceived strength in numbers.

Also coming down the pike is an organization formerly known as WRMA (World Record Muskie Alliance) that will be similar to Muskies, Inc. called WMA (World Muskie Alliance). However the goal will be for more than 90% of the money to stay at home. It's possible that the EMA and WMA will become one organization but those discussions are just getting off the ground.

With the formation of state or region specific organizations/alliances the future of Muskies, Inc. remains to be seen. With only 7500 members in Muskies, Inc. there is some question of strength in numbers when muskie fishermen number in the hundreds of thousands. Strength in numbers is most important when it's strength in dollars… Currently Muskies, Inc. is operating on a budget in the hundreds of thousands. Yet, when we need help, the money isn't there for us or any of the chapters. In fact, more often than not Muskies, Inc. is asking the chapters for additional dollars. All of the work that happens is done at the chapter level and when Muskies, Inc. can't support, or even assist, the work that needs to be done with OUR money.

My only concern is what is best for MMA and the fishery in Michigan. I know for a fact that we have lost members because we send so much money to Muskies, Inc. but never see anything in return. We needed Muskies, Inc. when we first started, there's no question about that. Now that MMA is established we may have outgrown Muskies, Inc., or maybe not I'm not convinced one way or another.

If our benefits from Muskies, Inc. are worth $5000+ each year to the MMA then we're in the right place as a chapter of Muskies, Inc.

To add to the above…

The WMA and EMA will be forming an organization called North American Muskie Alliance.

When a press release is available I will let you know.

I am not sure if I follow all this info. But what I will say is this: I feel I am not doing anything to help muskie fishing in michigan. If I were to write a check to mma, who would I send the money to? And if I do this, will this help us, or just muskies inc. Or is that the whole point of this post? So we will have an organization to directly help out michigan? If that is the case, I am all in. Adam

Any money MMA collects through raffles, banquet, etc. stays here to be used by MMA as we see fit (Iowa program, hatchery assistance, signs, etc).

The only money that goes to Muskies, Inc. is your membership money.

I am completely in favor of dropping the MI association. It may have been a different story in MMA's early years, but now with the number of members we have I think there's just too much $ involved to ignore.

Michigan's musky program needs more assistance right now than any other state, and our club has proven that the DNR is very willing to work with us. In other words, the biggest limitation for MMA certainly isn't political – it's funding!

annual MMA dues and stay affiliated with MI or not, I like the MOFC and seeing how Michigan ranks with other states. I enjoy the magizine.

Will, start another club call it the Will Schultz Muskie Alliance(kidding) seriously though why not do both, I am sure that MI is helping us a little bit.

take it as start another club and we will slowly seperate from MI the name was a joke. I would think that you would know how to go about starting something and what the purposes of it are. I would imagine most everyone would join dually and I know of quite a few that wont join MI because they are sending there money out of state.

Take it like that BLEEDER!!!! Laugh
