I was invited to speak to the Murray Lake Association members last night. There were questions surrounding the survey that was conducted in 2006 and how muskies might impact the fishery. Here are the slides that I presented during the 45 minute presentation. I also need to thank Mike Stinson for doing the legwork and setting this up with the MLA.

Very good solid information, Will. I like the population estimate graph with the annual mortality calculated in. Also, that is the first time I've seen the cisco population quantified at all. Thanks. Almost all the Murray folk I've run into seem to be geeked about the muskies, which is one reason the lake is doing fine.

Thanks again, Will, for all the work you do. So glad to see you had a good opportunity to use that "What Do Muskies Eat?" chart again.

For the chart "What do muskies eat?". I noticed no ciscos on there. What percentage would the ciscoes represent in a lake like Murray with a healthy cisco population? Any guesses or info on that?

That is a good question, I noticed the chart says "Northern Wisconsin Lakes" I also wonder what percentage Shad would be in lakes like Webster?

Primary forage depends on the lake, each is differnet. There will be a preferred forage and it will be at the top regardless of the type – Cisco, Shad, Sucker, Whitefish, Drum, Carp, etc. Look at the number of Cisco sampled during the survey but also look at the number of perch sampled. Murray isn't a sucker/perch lake like most of the Wisconsin lakes (like Long Lake in GT County or Sanford in Midland County). The data was used to show that a muskie is more likely to eat another Esocid than it would be to eat a Bluegill, Crappie, Bass or Walleye.

It should also be noted that normally these statistics are based on net surveys in shallow water which would capture a very low percentage of the open water roamers that inhabit lakes containing ciscoes. I'm sure if you had a stomach sample from a Murray Lake open water porker it would have a similar percentage of ciscoes as that of suckers in this example.

Very true.Big Will did a great job explaining those very things to the group.
He talked about how, where and when those samples were collected on Murray.
The group seemed very attentive and appreciative of the MMA presentation and Big Will got a nice round of applause when finished.
I would love to crack a joke here, but Will did a pretty professional job.
(Other than when he tried to use my back as a projector screen.)
There were a couple other MMA brothers that did a great job there as well
but I wont mention names without their permission.I think one was on the clock??SLACKER!!!! Wink
