Bought some line at Gander last nite. Of course the guy there knew I fish muskies. Asked me if I've ever fished Wabasis. I thought I read in an older forum page that it was concluded there weren't any muskies in Wabasis. But he told me he got one outta there this year. " Bout a 4-footer" Also, he told me he caught 4 muskies out of Mona Lake in Muskegon this year. All these fish he caught while bass fishing. I thought the 'skis were gone from Mona Lake too???
Interesting… I would like to see pics of the Wabasis fish, it's unlikely that it would be a tiger but could be an aquarium plant or a transplanted fish from another lake.
That isn't the first time I've heard about someone catching multiple muskies in Mona within the past year. It would be an appropriate gathering place for wandering lake Michigan fish because of the forage!!
I would not waste time targeting muskie on Mona Lake at this time. Every year or so we hear a muskie report on Mona Lake. There are no recent documents or photos of muskie, but it is possible that a muskie migrated over the years from Lake Macatawa. Mona Lake quality has been abused, but there is a very active well organized Mona Lake Association and Black Creek Watershed group working hard to improve the conditions of the lake. There is plenty of forage available and we'll see how the lake ranks with the future GLS program after 2009.
Will has the positive spirit! [smilie=woot.gif]
With a very lucky day it would only take one stray muskie caught to provide the DNR with need documentation, yes/no presence and northern or GLS stray?. Will could send in the DNA fin sample. Besides you may need to learn the lake eventually and there are some nice walleye for a meal to take home. The spoonpluggers have studied this lake well. Be sure to tap their knowledge.
Mona Lake outing November, be there! I think H Reef is just protecting a honey hole [smilie=biggrin.gif] Just kidding, but I would love to see the results of a couple of knowledgable muskie hunters dissecting maps and attacking this water for a full day? Macafatties spilling over OR GLS homebodies using a natural – normal – feeding bowl? (Option 2) Hmmmm…. Here is one I'll share for ya and I have more as i'm sure others do too. Anyone ever heard about the yester-years of Muskies in Bass Lake near Pentwater. Just heard of some more recent news of fish showing up there this year during the spring. Anyone?
ANY body of water that has a barrier-free connection to a Great Lake: has had, probably has right now, and will have sometime in the future, a muskie in it! Some have more than one, some even have breeding populations. If it previously had a connection but a dam now blocks it, it may still have a sustaining population of muskies in it!
Yes there is a channel to Lake Michigan. I have not personally fished Mona Lake in several years, because I moved away from the area. Yes it is a honey hole for the locals that have learned the lake for walleye, bass, perch, northerns, and specks. Access is limited to the Mona Lake Park which just received a grant this summer for much needed upgrading. Mona Lake Boat Club has access for members only. Bob Kingsley caught a tiger muskie several years ago. The first stocking of tigers did well feeding on carp, but the forage has changed since then with dominate change to gizzard shad and sheepshead. Late season eliminates the tourist speedboat idiots to fishermen only that are no problem.
I Have spent alot of time on Wabasis fishing other fish, and have alot of friends that live on the lake and around it. There are some very large pike and gar pike in Wabasis, but In my opion I would say there is no Muskies in Wabassis lake. Along the same lines I hear people say there are muskies Lincoln lake. Everytime I tried to run down the source it allways boils down to a friend of a friend with no picture. And alot of misconceptions due to its tiger stocking days. People still think its a "muskie lake", from non fishing lake residents.

I have not fished it this year. Not pleased with the condition of the ramp. Seems there was a large plant way back in 1992 or close to that but these 'skis were bait size, for the perch that is. Maybe a few survived. It would be a nice lake for an outing. Bigger than Murray, better if there are alot of boats. Kingfisher would take up the middle of the lake with his wide spread of the planer boards. We would be left with the little bays. Two falls ago Vicki and I witnessed large wakes near the Lake Harbor bridge, where the water really shallows up. Old reports of the 'skis pushing bait up into the shallows right before the channel to Lake Michigan. I really wonder if that was what we saw. We saw it from the walkway there. Tried later with the boat that same month but saw nothing.
Good Evening Fellas,
Interesting posts about Mona Lake. I live and work within walking distance of Mona Lake. Every year without exception there are people who tell me about muskies in Mona.
Now that Labor Day is over and the real fishing season is officially here, I plan to take some time and give this lake a try. It is too close not to.
There is one ramp just off of business 31. It leaves a little to be desired.
Went to Murray this morning. Fish were active. Night Crawlers really work great.
