I thinking of planing a trip to the UP for mid May around the old opener. I have never fished that far north that early in the spring. I’m sure it changes from year to year depending on what type of winter/spring we have weather wise. I’m interested if anyone has fished up there around this time & if it is worth the trip? I’m not totally sure what the plan is or where we are going but the last couple years we have done some early spring backpacking/kayaking trips in the Northern LP. Part of the reason for going early in the year would be so we hopefully avoid the bugs.
When l lived up there the big water was still really cold. So we usually walleye fished the opener. If we did any esox fishing it was generally in 5 FOW or less and if it had rock it was better. You might have a chance at one in Munuscong. But that is big water to sort through. Moon island, grassy island and Fowlers bay are good starting places. Usually, the second week after the opener we fished Dollarville. You will see alot of fish. Maybe catch one or two. Not huge fish mid 30/low 40. Small bucktails and topwaters work good.

Where you Walleye fishing Munuscong or inland lakes? Does walleye season ever close on the big water up there? I was thinking either taking my boat & camping above Dollarville or taking the kayaks & doing a float trip between Newberry & the upper falls.
I fished walleye on both big and small water. Yes, the season closes in March and reopens in May. Usual big water spots on the opener for walleye were the Back Bay (Whiskey Bay), Bay De-Wasi, Big Lake George, Munuscong Bay, Raber Bay, and Tahquamenon Bay. As far as small water goes if it had walleye or musky in it and it was 2.5hrs or less away from the Soo l probably fished it. Many trips to Brevoort lakes though it has a really low musky and walleye population. Countless trips to Manistique lakes. North and South hold some musky the big lake is an excellent walleye lake. Tahquamenon River has musky in the whole stretch as far up the Natalie launch as you dare to travel all the way down to the mouth.
