[quote="Smada962"]Clearly the DNR does not care about Muskies in Austin at all, and wants them out of there by any means necessary ASAP.
I don't think that's really the case. The DNR doesn't want muskies out. They know muskies are good to have in a lake. They just don't want to put muskie money into that lake with it being prone to diseases. Somehow those spear-chuckers always get their way. What a bunch of spoiled brats!

They dont reproduce in Austin
Don't speak too quickly…. There have been hunches
I may have overreacted a bit. This topic just gets to me. As far as the natural reproduction I am crossing my fingers like everyone else, but as of now, it doesn't look very promising.

I still don't get the purpose of spearing? They seriously think it would be beneficial for them to eat 25-30 lbs of muskie? Or from the sounds of it go there and try to get some every wkend. I can't see them wanting to mount a speared fish cause it could possibly ruin the fish in the first place.
I am with you and can not understand just killing something for the hell of it. I never went spearing or grew up around it and I just don't get it. Can anyone explain the thrill of this? My guess it is a bunch of guys who would rather avoid their families and drink in a shack on the ice but maybe I am wrong.

Because it's their heritage to spear and kill fish whenever they want. Catch and release be damned, I'm taking 'em all home!!!!

[quote="swanezy"]Are there any other bans in inland lakes in sw michigan?
Look at Note 8 for spearing bans:

So basically every stocked muskie lake has a spearing ban except Austin. Awesome 🙄
Has the idea of a "Muskie spearing season" been discussed? I know it's not the best solution but I really don't think the spearers are going anywhere and this could somehow lessen the effects. Maybe a special license for an extra fee with a shorter season and a yearly limit of one or two fish. Believe me, I would rather see it gone completely I just don't see it happeneing anytime soon.

Who decided to put muskie's in Austin and why?
It was a carryover from the tiger lakes.

well it is legal and as long as its at least 42 then its there right!!!!!!!!!!!
theres alot of lakes with spearing bans in place not around me but alot of lakes have a ban!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, lots of lakes with a muskie spearing ban… (please note sarcasm) 15 or so out of 111 lakes. Seems to me the muskie "angler" is the one getting the short end of the stick here… Yet somehow we're the only ones doing anything to make the fishery better. Then again, we're only doing that for selfish reasons because we're elitist, rich and don't care about other anglers or spearers.

No not even close. See note above, it's about 15 out of 111 managed lakes and there are roughly 40 regularly stocked waters.

Yes, it just got extended in 2008.
It doesn't look like Hamlin has a spearing ban in place. I wonder how many mid-30's fish have been illegally stuck. I try to take emotion out of the equation, but I just don't understand the current regulations around spearing muskies. Without sounding completely hypocritical, if someone would have offered me the chance to go sit in a shanty and spear a muskie 15-20 years ago I probably would have gone and not given it a second thought. I doubt I would have gone more than once because my ADD would not have allowed me to sit and stare in a hole for hours. But, I know for a fact I would have eaten what I speared and one fish would have been enough for me for the entire season.

I'm all for sharing the resource but it needs to go both ways, in my opinion spearing is not sharing it is completely selfish. However, it is legal and as long as the fish is of legal length it is completely legal to harvest one each day during season – don't blame the person spearing. MMA asked (begged, pleaded, etc) that the Austin spearing ban not be lifted because stocking was being discontinued, but it was done anyway. If you have something to say about this please e-mail Jay Wesley: ** you do not have permission to see this link **
I will get on it this week as well.

I care about them, but I disagree with the species selection that they have chosen. Another 6 minutes down the road is Sugarloaf where the pike are numerous in the 30"-41" range. I digress.
I would be willing to bet that those spears cost one of those guys a pretty penny as well, not to mention the darkhouse, etc etc.
As much as i hate to say it, the markings look Austin like but 50+? Everything grows big in that lake, I am beginning to think the Upjohn pond is having an effect on all the fish there..
