A buddy and I are going to the U.P to fish for a week in September, 21-26. We are staying in the Gould City area and our plan was to hit Tahquamenon, McKeever, Grassy and maybe South Manistique. We have fished Tahq & South Manistique before but have not fished McKeever or Grassy. Are McKeever & Grassy worth our time? If not, what lakes would be worth giving a shot? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes

Thanks for the info! Any specific places on these lakes that are better than others during that time of year?

I cant really comment on that cuz haven't been in the fall, but the lakes are small so fairly easy to figure out. Big Island isn't far from gassy/mckeever and worth fishing too. Could give north Manistique a shot too. Brevort would be another option on the east UP and Munuscong/Raber can fish well that time of year if you want a shot at bigger fish.

McKeever is an easy fish, with obvious good stuff. Also, Raber is a fun spot to fish, with pike and smallies that can keep you busy during the typical slow musky bite.

Thanks for the info on McKeever lake guys! Does anybody have any other lakes within an hour or two of Gould City that might be good to try out?
Thanks in advance for any info!

Kingston Lake is pretty cool, but you need good 4WD and an easy to launch boat as the lauch is shallow and sandy.

i had my first multiple fish day on mckeever. almost multiple lake day too as i was on kingston that mornong and hooked up. beautiful lakes, and as said a good 4×4 and a shallow trailer are good ideas for kingston. i have a pic somewhere of my boat not yet in the water and about 50' of sand between the front of my truck and the end of the cement ramp of the launch. on mckeever its a small lake that you can figure out quickly. i had luck wherever there was a good mix of weeds and pads, and have heard others say the same.

Thanks for the info guys. Does anyone know if Grassy Lake or Big Island Lake have public launches or are they carry in only?

Big Island Lake is carry in only. Grassy Lake I think still has a launch.

Question about Grassy, the stocking reports say they haven't planted muskie in there for 30 years. Does this lake have a good natural population of reproducing muskies or are the reports that far off?

The stocking reports are accurate. Virtually every lake ever stocked with muskies in the UP has a naturally reproducing population now, including Grassy. Another little puddle lake to check out is Dana Lake, just south of McKeever a bit. Opposite end of spectrum is needle in a haystack trophy hunting on Indian Lake.

Oh and not only is Big Island a carry in 1/4 mile portage, but the lake is no motor including electric AND no wheeled carts. Which means low pressure and big fish!

Mckeever was very slow last week, lazy follows. Grassy, no fish spotted. Fishing was slow all the way around, even pike/bass/walleye. We were coming off a stormy weather pattern the prior week, and cold front early week when we were up there. Still my favorite place to fish, compared to the zoo fishing that I encountered at Austin and Bankson with Chris on Labor day. Cant beat fishing on some of the most beautiful waters in the world.
