I am getting ready for the Chicago Muskie show and was looking for some ideas on what rods, reels, line and types of leaders you guys use for trolling. I normally do not troll but I am going to try to in 2009. I am adding some Traxstech rod holders to my boat and need (2) setups to start with. Any ideas would be appreciated.
We are on exactly the same page here, Ed! I was just thinking about the whole trolling thing myself. The one problem I have, is I have a fiberglass boat, so I'm guessing it's not as easy to just screw on a few rod holders. I trolled a little this year, but I'm tired of holding onto the rod, steering, and eating lunch all at the same time.

Drilling through glass only hurts for a little while… Measure three times, and drill once. Make sure you use through bolts. Access from the underside is usually the tough part, however it can be done.
I got some of the 18" Traxstech tracks and inserts at the Cabelas bargain cave and I am looking for the rest this winter and this will be the setup I should have for the Spring:
(2) 18" tracks (have them)
(2) 18" inserts (have them)
(2) 18" backing plates (looking)
(1) Set of end caps (looking)
(2) RRH-400-17 Saltys (looking)
I called Traxstech and told them what I am looking for and they put me on a list for the parts I am looking for and if they have some made that don't pass inspection because of a scratch or small imperfection they will call me and sell them at a reduced price. They helped me with the layout and they are very nice folks and this is their link:

I have the traxstech (or Berts actually) and have used it for about 5 years and have had great results. I have been able to set up downriggers, trolling rod holders, down easters with them. I used some flat steel as a backing plate and works fine. I think you will like the set up and the versatility..Scott
You would think for backing plates, it might be cheaper to make your own. If you have some of the proper tools or some of the proper friends, that is. My guess is, a local blacksmith or welding shop would have plenty of scrap laying around that they would gladly sell. They would sell it to you for double what they would get at a scrap yard, but it would still be cheaper for you. Everybody wins!
