So my buddy buys a lure trolling depth book and we find out our lures arn't
getting down like we thought they were.
Can you guys throw out some numbers as far a adding weight and how
much depth will be gained (using 30lb p-line.).

Thanks,

-kid

Hi Kid, its a lot of trial and error as you know. I have those 10 footers spooled with braid and everything goes deeper with them. I add weight on St. Claire but I dont think I get much deeper until I get over 4 oz. inline. Im using 30 as well when Im running the prop rods. Sometimes you gots to run the deep style lures instead of the go to baits. Mike

Kid –

Chad will appreciate how I start… responding to a question with a question. Wink

Why do you want to go deeper?

It's pretty rare that I'm concerned with getting a lure deep enough. In many situations it's easy to run a lure too deep and you'll end up spooking or lining fish that are in the top 12-15 feet of the water column. When dealing with suspended fish or fish tight to the bottom on a breakline I don't want to run a lure at the depth where I'm marking fish, I want the lure above them. For example, if I'm seeing fish on the graph that are 15' down I'm only going to run lures down 10'. If they're 20' down I'm not going to run anything deeper than 15'. When I do want to get a lure down to a depth over 10-12 feet I'm going to use a deep diving lure and not add weight.

However, I'll add weight in a couple situations:
1. When I want to keep a lure down in the wash on a short line. An example would be running an 8oz weight 5-6 feet in front of a lure that's running in, or next to, the propwash on 2-10 feet of line.
2. When I want to get another couple feet out of a trolling lure like a Hoginator.

I personally enjoy the looks I get when people see me casting a 10" Hooker, It lets them know right up front I'm insane and to stay away from my boat. 😯 😈 If they get too close I give em' a good look at it up close and personal.

Ahh,a couple of commede-anns.This book is leading me to believe that
more often than not my lures are not getting close to the advertised
diving depth. You need wire line,or 80lb power pro, with ALOT of line out
going 4mph to get the advertised depth.
Many times on Murray Im looking for a little more depth than say Thorn
or Oster.I might not have been in the ballpark of where I wanted to be??

KC – I haven't seen the book so I don't know if what they're telling you jibes with what I know.

If you have the time post some stats from the book on a few lures. For instance, tell us what the book says for line length to get a 10" jake down ten feet, a Grandma 9" down ten feet, a straight Depthraider down ten feet.

I've seen info about the book but it didn't give any specifics. I'll have to find a copy to see what it says.

OK Will so you are saying that you need to run the lure about 5 ft above the fish right. so if you are makeing fis in the top 5 feet you just short line them so the lure runs in the top 2 or 3 ft?

Thanks LeMay OUT

I have a feeling I know where you're talking about and YES 2-3' down is perfect when the fish are up high. This would be my starting point then I would start varying depth if there was no action.

One thing I'll watch for is fish slime on the flouro leaders. If I see slime on the leader I'll run the lure shallower.
