I have kind of a random question for anyone who throws top raiders often. They always seems like a great idea to throw but I have never had any action on them before and I know some people throw them a ton and do well.
My question for those who catch fish on them is this, is it better to burn them in fast like a bucktail, or reel them slowly barely making the prop splash, or somewhere in between?
I am sure the answer is probably all of the above, but I'm just looking for some feedback from guys that use them more often.
In my experience with these baits, I have had the best action when retrieving them fairly fast, but slow enough I can still hear the individual "plops" of the prop… if that makes sense.
I also have had very mixed results on different lakes. some lakes I spend a fair amount of time on I get absolutely no lovin' on with prop baits, and only with WTD of creepers, other lakes (plus the tahq) they seem to like them almost as much as anything else… Unless I hear of guys catching fish on them or using them on a regular basis on a certain lake, I don't put much credence in a skunking.
Id agree there too, color is kinda my last factor, I usually buy something in the black, frog and baitfish range to give each type of lure a fair shot. most of my contacts have honestly been on a silver and copper sucker-ish color. but have had good luck with black too. It also depends a bit, I am sure, on time of day and visibility, but I think the action on the surface tripping their trigger is more important.
So many factors go into how I fish a proptail topwater. I choose a speed in relationship to my perceived sight distance, not unlike a bucktail. If they're in shallow tall/thick weeds the speed is going to be slow compared to fish that are a little deeper or fish that are on a shallow flat with sparse weeds (think milfoil vs cabbage). Along with the weed/depth variable for sight distance is water clarity and clear = faster. Fast though isn't remotely close to burning a bucktail, fast is medium (est. 2.5 mph). Every lake seems to have it's idiosyncrasy with proptails, plop vs splash, slow plop, slow splash, etc. and then there are those waters where they just don't eat them at all IMO.
