Is Tip up fishing for stocked lake muskies looked down upon or not appeciated among the MMA community?? Even if you are right at the holes(not binocular flag fiishing )and using a quick set rig or a shiner on a barbless treble hook?????
What`s your take?I guess I`m alright with it as long as the fish is handled the same way as in a boat and net.Don`t let it get on the ICE so it won`t loose any slime /slime gets frozen…gills, eye balls, etc…gettin stuck to ice.

When using tip ups we should always be fast to the flag and set the hook immediatly. Pike can and will swallow minnows pretty fast and sub legal pike have been getting killed for many many years because of the old let them run and turn the minnow tactic. For Muskies I use a 8 to 10 inch sucker on a double treble hook rig. I place the hooks one on each side of the sucker one forward of the dorsel and one behind the dorsel fin. I set the hooks as soon as the line is in my hands. Even more fun though is to use a darkhouse and cut a 24 inch square hole and fish a big minnow on a heavy action Ice rod . Watching the Muskie or Pike come in and hit the Minnow is priceless. Its like spearing without the spear(hooks in the decoy) ha ha ha . You can un hook in the water and step out for a quick picture and then back inside to release. Darkhouse fishing is fun. Its like watching television when you are on a clear lake . We have also jigged with Fuzzy Duzzits and large soft plastics. I have a rod holder in my cabelas darkhouse where I set a heavy action Thornbros solid glass Big pike rod. The reel is an ABU 6500 with 65 lb braid line and 90 lb steel leader. Michelle and I are getting ready to start looking for good ice. Im guessing another week if it stays cold. Give us a shout. I agree with Kingfisher. Some of my most memorable muskie times were looking through the big hole. It's very similar to normal fishing, some days slow, some days active. When they take, they just sit down there head-shaking before bolting away, just like open water. We used airplane jigs that could work a 5'-6' diameter but a Tiger Tube would probably do fine, too.
