I need a definition of this. I keep reading posts about these but I have no idea what it is. It kinda seems like opposite is the key word. Opposite meaning same lure/different color, different lure/same color, surface/subsurface, fast/slow, etc. Am I close of this or am I way off? If I get a follow on a Doc, what should I use as a throwback?

Some people have a rod rigged with something that can be work slower for the lazy followers. It could be a surface lure or a crank jerked by the fish.

A throwback lure can be ANY lure, really. If you were tossing a Doc, that's topwater, WTD. Maybe try a small bucktail burned back to the boat. If you were throwing a bucktail, maybe a twitchbait could be the throwback. I can think of 2 instances right off hand where I didn't have time to switch lures for the thorwback, and I didn't have my other rod rigged either. So my throwback was the exact same lure, only fished waaay differently. I had a hot follow on a crankbait. Missed on the L-turn. I tosed back to her, and snapped the rod a few times. I watched her turn and eat it. Then, just my last missed a bucktail at mid-retrieve. I tossed back out, and ripped, jerked, sped up, and slowed down the retrieve. She came in, and nailed it on the 8.

I have actually had my best luck using the same lure that drew the follow/strike the 1st time around. I just do what Jim said and fish it totally different. Although if the original lure doesnt do the job after about 3-4 quick casts then I usually switch to my "throwback".

As mentioned above its whatever bait you immediately throw back. I personally make that decision based on how the fish is behaving when it follows: here’s a couple of examples: For Simplicity let’s say I’m initially throwing a Bucktail when the fish comes in
1. Nosed up tight to the bait and follows thru an 8 but doesn’t fully commit and turns away – I throw back the Same Bait but I may change up the speed/direction on the next retrieve.
2. Hot on the Tail of the Bait but doesn’t follow into the 8 and disappears below/under the boat – I will generally go with something rubber that I can keep down for the entire retrieve. My reasoning on this – It’s a skittish fish, and likely returned to a depth of comfort, and hopefully if something to eat comes by again that stays/hangs in the comfort area (out of direct site of the boat) she will go.
3. Fish comes in several feet below and or trailing a ways behind the bait and has no reaction to the 8 – To be honest this scenario for me has been one of the toughest to convert on a throwback regardless of what I use. Generally I only make a single cast back and it’s usually going to be something completely different than what I was initially throwing. If nothing happens on the throw back I back off the spot, and return when there’s a change in conditions.
