I was trolling last night by myself, it was around 9pm,beautiful night. not another boat on the lake for at least an hour. I rounded the point at the park and was trolling 17 feet of water..just off shore a little ways when I heard a dog bark behind me.I looked behind me and some guy in a pontoon was cruising fairly quickly up on me about 100ft back. I yelled at him that my lines were back there. He yelled back that I cut him off and was running him towards shore(at 3.5mph??) I hollered back that I didnt know he was even there(no lights on his pontoon)he sped up and cut hard left right behind me. he sped up even faster.I yelled at him that he had my lines and he went full throttle across the lake towards the river.
Both rods screaming line out and bent right over, all I could do was cut the line. I threw the rods in the bottom of the boat and went after the guy I got my spot light out but it was dead and all I had was a small light and my headlamp. I aproached him as he slowed right at the shallows in the river and gave him a good screamdown and threatened to give him the beatdown he deserved, but decided against violance(I still regret not whipping him in the face a few times with my 9ft rod!!)I didnt get a great look at him, but seemed like the typical toothless hillbilly that lives on the lake and thinks that they own it.
Just wanted to let people know what kind of trash is floating around on the lake, never had a problem that bad before but always had other people with me. Im still pissed that a great night fishing was ruined that fast andnow need to respool 2 reels and I lost my 2 favorite grandmas!!!

Were you trolling with mono? Someone told me a funny story (Pete) about this happening to someone all the time, he would thumb the spool till the mono was close to breaking, then let the rod go. Kinda like a fiberglass javelin with eye's on it! Distance you ask, close enough to scare them really bad, also very nasty ball of mono around prop. Bad part is leaving the line in the water or serious injury to your thumb. I wouldn't attempt this with braid, unless you have a oven mitt on!

I was trolling grandmas about 50 ft back with 80lb braid,I m not a troller so I was just using the rod holders built into my boat that run strait back at 45 deg up, so he had to get pretty close to hook both lines with his boat.

Sounds like angler harrassment to me. I might have tried to get his boat registration number, and then call the Barry Co. sheriff…

For more info on this technique contact captn Larry Jones!

Bummer to lose 2 g-ma's…that really stinks. Been close to getting lines taken, but never happened.

I was going to get his boat # but my spot light was dead, thats why all I could do was scream him down and do a little threatening..If I wasnt so frazzled I wish I would have at least taken some pics with my camera…….I think I just found a reason/excuse to buy a go-pro video camera!!!

Careful, I'm one of those local hillwilliams. We shoot back. Except that brings the law. Easier and lots more fun to just use a pair of pipe wrenches to steal the ball off the back of your truck and sit back to watch the show.

Kidding

Another view is that other boaters may be either ignorant or stupid. Ignorance should be forgiven, and that can happen within a moment, but you can't fix stupid no matter how hard or long you try.

well if your a local and on this forum then you are a better person than "that guy", but hes not the only person ive dealt with that thinks because they live on the lake they own the lake. I just dont understand why people feel the need to be rude just to be rude, if they are jerks enough and enough people complain about the locals then we will stop going to that lake and we will stop going to the local stores and spending our money wich your friends or family work at wich in the long run will only hurt the locals and if people stop fishing the lake the DNR will stop funding the lake…get the drift. You should be pissed about some of the bad press that these jerks bring to your wonderful back yard. If you dont want outsiders in your back yard then move to a private lake, everyone that moves to that lake and bitches about all the fishermen are just plain stupid and I hope they fall off their boat while peeing.Kind of like moving to a golf course and complaing about all the golf carts and badly dressed golfers!!
Us musky guys are the wrong croud to complain about, we are stewards of the lake, we care for the water, the fish and have respect for others while out fishing. Ive never been out on that lake without removing discarded line, beer cans, and trash that ive seen the locals throwing overboard. I cant speek for everyone but Im sure I speak for the majority of people.
and by the way my balls are welded on and my pin is locked!! haha hope to see you on the water, I just hope you dont try stealing my grandmas!!

and as far as fixing stupid, its true you cant fix stupid and you cant teach common sense, you cant even beat it into people…Ive tried, and its pointless, all you get is sore knuckles.and a stupid person with no common sense.

Ah, my people. If one wanted to be truely wicked, like "go-to-hell-for-this-sort-of-thing", one would replace a hitch pin with a couple strip ties. Meanest and most dangerours prank I know of. If it's not a felony it should be.

Damn, well fortunately you did the right thing by restraining yourself but……….. I'm sure there's a fair number of people that would of loved to see you give him what he deserved, me included. I've been there, we've all been there, and it sucks taking the high road. Although if you would of beat his ass, maybe next time he'll think twice about going out without lights.javascript:emoticon('[smilie=bangtard.gif]')

I have found that karma usually rewards me for restraining myself when the rude boaters or tourney guys muscle there way in to the downwind drift.. 2 fish caught casting literally past the rudeness. Now when that jet ski or pontoon passes within 100ft, I take a liking to it :-).

Sorry about your loss..I usually lose lures to my own backlashes, not others…

maybe it was a sign…. that I need a go-pro camera AND NEW LURES!!!! Ive never lost a lure musky fishing. I think its time to do some updating. The only problem is those two g-mas caught more fish(musky, pike, large and small mouth bass, walleye and a foul hooked blue gill)than almost any other two baits Ive ever owned, and I dont use them very often. maybe I should troll more often.its the only time I use g-mas.
