Gun… locals blaming muskies because they can't catch any of the walleyes that have been stocked. So… the DNR gives in and stops stocking muskies. Did the walleye fishing get any better? NO! Did the fishery improve overall? NO! In fact, the bass average size is smaller, the panfish are now undersize because the bass are smaller AND the walleye fishing hasn't improved over the last twenty years.
Making decisions based on feelings and pressure from the public doesn't make good fisheries.
You forgot to mention the DYNAMITE hammerhandle pike fishery that has boomed in the last 10 years…
I have spent a lot of hours fishing the lake over the last 20 years, I only wish I would have been 'enlightened' to muskies in my teenage years when they were stong in there. I'm sorry, I thought I was going to be the next Larry Nixon, ok??? (I hope, for your sake, none of you got that BassMasters reference!) It used to be an absolute rarity to catch a pike in Gun, and when we did, we got some REALLY nice ones. Today, the pike have exploded and you can hardly beg one over 20".
AND, keep in mind that Gun always WAS a trophy muskie lake- always as in since forever, as in a native population of Great Lakes Strain muskies via Lake Michigan-Kalamazoo River-Gun River-Gun Lake. Dams, of course, have cut off that lifeblood; habitat destruction in the littoral spawning zones has certainly occurred and hindered the ones left; and everyone's favorite- you're darn right the lake got the stuffing speared out of it during the heyday of the 30's 40's and 50's, and they continue today to pick off a few.
