Yep, the rod can make a big difference too. This lure likes long rods but not soft rods and hooking/landing is improved with 8'+ rods.Mike, I'm interested to know how many fish in the net vs. hits you've had with the Weagle? You said 60 strikes I think, what percent have you landed?
About 1 out of 6. Granted the rod I use is not an 8 footer but it is a heavy action cue stick. It is like 7'2" Most of the ones I miss never touch the lure. They fly right over it or the water explodes and the bait just dances right out of the froth. Its frustrating sometimes. I wait to feel the fish and it doesnt happen or Bam they are there and I get them. Its not due to fishing a light rig or rod. Hook sets are deep and I have to cut sometimes. We will have to do a morning together sometime and Ill show you what I am probably doing wrong ha ha . More than likely I still need to slow down furthur. My death march may be too fast yet. When I am patient and not bothered by high winds is when I do the best with this lure.
One evening on Fluke lake last year I had 5 hits on the lure in one retrieve. when I figure eighted it there were three chasing it through the first turn. Out of all that action I only felt one little bump with no hook up. Two of the strikes were savage with the fish cartwheeling out of the water missing it completely. I really think Im going to find out I am still too fast or not steady enough. I know one thing, I can move a ton of fish with this lure. I can make them attack with a vengance. Im just not hooking many. Mike
60 strikes to catch 10? Yikes… I think it might have a lot to do with the fish and not really the fisherman. My guess, much like fishing big rubber, the fish are just not getting a mouthful of lure. The Weagle is a big fish bait and it is made for big mouths. I can count on one hand the number of fish over 42 that didn't make it in the net with that bait. Sure you'll catch some of the smaller fish with it, but if I want to catch fish under 40" the Weagle is not a bait I will throw. A 6" bait that has the same swoosh glide would be a great bait for the 30-40" fish and I'm certain it would catch larger fish too.
Just so there's some data to go with this opinion…
Out of 46 fish on a Weagle over the past few years only 17 have been under 40". The remaining 29 fish average 43".
So.. basically what I'm saying is that this isn't a search lure. We (Cady's Inner Circle) said this in the beginning of the Weagle and I think what you're experiencing confirms this. I'm only throwing the Weagle on a bigger fish that I've located or on "good structure" that is known to be a consistent big fish spot.
Ahh 💡 that is probably a lot of it. I have been using it as a search lure. First choice to throw in many cases because of the attacks on it. I notice a lot of the fish under 40 inches get hooked outside of the mouth. There is an Idea. A low riding 6 inch weagle. hardwood, what could I call it? I might have to try spinning a few.
But back to the problem. Yes most fish caught on it have been under 40inches and most of the misses have been smaller fish. 30 to 40. I have been using it to fish shallow water because other lures get weeded up or are not as fun to fish. I have had several big fish miss it though but I chalk that up to not fishing it slow enough.
