Leaving for annual U.P. Adventure on Thursday. Breaking the new boats western u.p. cherry. The tentative schedule includes camping at Bewabic, hitting Emily, Smokey, and the Paint River above Peavy. On the return trip the Tahquemenon, Grassy, possibly Cusino, and depending on weather, Neebish/Munoscong for a day or two. Always looking for new/amazing musky waters and pizza joints so feel free to add your two cents…….
Guaranteed great trip, sounds awesome!
For the west end of your trip, Riverside Pizza is best in the Iron River/Crystal Falls area, though probably not in the 'amazing' category. It's been there forever though so that's cool.
Can't help you much in the mid-yoop, but once you get back towards the east end you are in business-
Pizza Stop in Curtis is very good, but when you are that close to Newberry you must eat at The Pizza Place. Mind-blowing amazing. They don't open until 4:00 and they close by 10:00 most nights though, so sometimes hard to fit it just right in the fishing schedule. But a must have.
Once you get over towards St. Mary's, I've heard Pizza Patch in Kincheloe is good but I haven't had it. I always have Peterson's down towards Raber- Really good! You wouldn't think it coming from a little mom-pop country store… it's called Peterson's Country Store, and is in fact run by an elderly couple. Raber Ray there knows all the recent fishing reports plus makes a damn fine pizza. Conveniently located right between Twin Island and Raber Bay boat launches, but they do not stay open late so plan accordingly!
Ha thanks Duke.
I ha just read something about Riverside on an unrelated forum.
The guy posting is from downstate and loves it. He is even ordering 32 half baked pies to eat over time.
As for Newberry, we have been going up there for the last 15 years or so. We would always stop on the corner and get Pizza Hut….we finally decided to try the Pizza Place like 5 years ago and have not been to Pizza Hut since. Sometimes we even go back to back days at the Place!!! One of the best in the state I believe. Thanks for the info. Maybe I'll be posting pics of 50 inch muskies and assorted slices!!!'
I would skip Grassy and fish Mceever instead. Gassy has not been stocked in years. Nothing but Lots of Pike in there. Mceever has some good Fish in it. There could be a couple of large Muskies left in Grassy. We did see one back in 2004 but that was 10 years ago. Good luck on your trip. Michelle and I did that run many many times. Work the points on Smokey and the deep cabbage on the western shore . There is sunken Isl;and about mid lake that also is good structure. Dont be afraid to troll open water there. Emily is loaded with mid size muskies. Cast copper and brown colored lures. Peavy Pond is a visual treat. Watch for the wood in the river. Mike and Michelle
Thanks Mike
Sorry I didn't get back with you in time about the lures….been working like a maniac to get enough loot to go on this trip. We will totally reconsider Grassy. Have been to Mckeever 6 to 8 times and never do any good. Landed a small 30's a few years ago and that has been it. It looks amazing and I have to think the area to the right of the launch when you are looking out would hold fish. Sort of a mixed agenda on this trip. I am looking for size while other two guys are looking for numbers. We always get tempted to venture into Vilas, did it last time at the expense of trying smokey… Looking forward to hitting it this time. Probably make a stab at Chicagon too…..
