Well most stories, actually all up till now, that I've heard about the winter musky harvest haven't been so favorable regarding folks actually obeying the new tag law. But here's one that turned out about as well as can be expected:
Yoop lake X has been getting speared more and more the last 3 years. "Angler" takes a 46"er a few weeks ago, tells the world up there. Word finally reaches a musky nut, asks around if the spearer used his tag. No one up there knows much of the tag, shockingly, and the consensus is a big no. In fact it sounds like a tag has never been and might never be used in the yoop given the responses. Sooo…the DNR is called (go proactive yooper!)…spearer's shack is still on the ice a week after bragging up the kill. Officer confronts the angler, asking how the season has gone. Nothing admitted, but the CO notices some uneasiness…asks about a 46" fish speared on the lake a week ago. Suspect surprisingly takes credit for the fish! Immediately the CO starts in about the new tag system, why he's still targeting muskies at this time and such. He's about to get off with a warning, playing dumb saying that he'll stop chasing muskies right away now that he understands these complicated new rules. CO is about to leave but before heading out asks to see the angler's license. It shows that a musky tag was bought just a few days before, after the 46" was killed! CO then realizes that he's been lied to & that the angler understood the musky tag law from the get go most likely. A ticket was issued! First one of which that I've heard of…thanks to the fella who reported the violation (one of my fav fishin buds!), and to the CO, who is one of the best! He has like 4 counties to cover by himself up there, but he really does do his best, and loves muskies which helps. It is a real tough law to enforce, so it sure is great to hear when it does work out to help our resource!

Good to hear. I was up years ago on Cusino, and ran into the CO. He was a mountain of a man, and he really seemed to like muskies. Hopefully, this helps turn the tide up there.
That would be him! He is a GREAT guy- not just in stature but a super good dude. You can imagine how he is able to 'encourage compliance' in his area – we are really lucky to have him, as in <url url="[Permission to view this media is denied]

Very good to hear. Sometimes a little reminder that there is a consequence to breaking the law, and someone really is watching, is all that is needed to spread the word, and put the breaks on illegal harvest. For a period of time anyhow.
Also good to see good guys as CO's, and that guy is enormously tall! (At least to those of not in the Vandekopple family)
Glad to hear one spearer has been tagged [smilie=brows.gif] . It's about time that those dudes up there get tagged with tickets. I am sure others are now going be more compliant as time goes on. Word will spread and the griping will start. I can hear Holmes now. One of his pets got spanked. Now we have to work on our areas especially Austin. Time for the tag brigade to ride!!!! 😀
Much better story than what I heard this week concerning three under 30's that got killed, two from the same guy. I hear the guy was sick that he did it and wanted to know how to better ID them. I give him credit for wanting to learn but isn't it just like hunting? Don't shoot unless you're 100% sure of your target!!
How do you think an under 30 fish is 42"?? You would think after the first one he would learn that a fish that size is nowhere near the legal limit and maybe wait for one that is quite a big bigger before stabbing another?? The problem is there is only one way to learn the size of a fish under water and it is through experience…
That is a biggun for Margrethe. My only console for seeing a fish speared in Margrethe is that at least that guy has used his tag and cant go 30 minutes to the west and spear another one this year…
