It's getting close to sucker time. What's the best way to transport suckers and then keep them alive? Thanks for any info!

I have to head to Indiana to get mine like most, I can't get any bait shops around here to order them for me. I usually bring 3 large plastic totes full of water in the back of my truck. I buy about 15-18 at a time, and throw 5-6 suckers in each tote. I don't even use an aerator, but I do stop and buy a bag of ice or two and put that in there for the ride home which really helps. Once home they go in a big horse trough type tank with a heavy duty pump. I change the water out every couple days cause they make it real nasty in a hurry. The biggest issue for me is temperature, if it is getting into the 70's or more during the day it can be quite the pain. For transporting to the lake I just throw a couple in my boat's livewell, if you don't have a livewell a large cooler with battery powered aerator should work just fine.

Yup, like Smada said… temperature is your worst enemy. When it gets cold out 50° or less, a cooler has been great for me to transport. I wish big suckers were prevalent in our area!

I forgot to tell you,I saw on another website that some places in WI. were having trouble getting suckers. Don't know if this is just a problem in WI. or everywhere. I talked to Terry at the Minnow Bucket in Jackson and he said they get there minnows from some place by Homer, MI. He said you can probably get big suckers there. Can't remember the name of the place.

I was at Ye Olde last year when their distributor was delivering them, he told me all his suckers come from Minnesota.

Is it legal to catch your own? Maybe in a river with a casting net?

Not unless you catch them out of the same body of water that you intend to use them in. And I could be wrong but I believe cast nets are only allowed on the great lakes, and not inland lakes/rivers.

Just please make sure you read up on the tactics to successfully fish with suckers without hurting fish. If done poorly, sucker fishing may be the easiest way to kill our largest specimens. Using the right set-ups, paying attention to the bait you have out, and not allowing the fish to "eat" are essential. Suckers are great, but in the wrong hands they can be bad for the fishery. That being said, if you have done your homework, good luck.
