I am sure there are plenty of old discussions on sucker rigs, but I couldn't find one in recent history… so anyhow, while trolling the dark house forum on m-s I came across a product and wondered if anyone had tried it? looks pretty interesting and possibly something to incorporate into my sucker rigs…
any thoughts or better ideas??? (more or less trying to make convo hear, I am bored till the ice makes up its mind)

Made something like that years ago with thinner wire and it wasn't a good idea. I figured the thin wire would straighten easily and break free but quickly found out that wasn't the case. Shumway makes something like that now but it doesn't go completely through it just pins on each side:

Seems like a decent way to do it but a simple #6 light wire hook is so easy and completely fool proof.
I know there are some rigs out there that the treble hooks aren't even stuck through the skin of the sucker. I thought at first that the Shumway rig might actually be "illegal" in Michigan, but I think as long as you hook the trebles through the skin, you would technically be OK.
From the Regs Handbook:
A person shall not use or otherwise release baitfish that are listed as
Susceptible Fish Species in any public waters of the state, unless that
person is fishing and those baitfish are attached to a hook.
As a lot of the laws go, this could be translated a few different ways, but I would hate to see a CO get picky on some stuff like the Shumway rig.

The Shumway rig has two hooks attached to the fish so I don't really get what your point is? If you are saying it needs to be hooked through the mouth then any rubber-band rig would be illegal too

I was just saying that I've seen some rigs where the trebles are even rubber-banded to the sucker, so there were no hooks penetrating any of the suckers' skin. I thought I saw someone on You-Tube rigging this way. Can't remember if it was with the Shumway, or a rubberband rig.
Ah okay, I know the Shumway rig is made to be hooked into the sucker so that shouldn't be a problem
I should have been more specific. I run the rubber band through the nostrils with a needle, then on my leads I bend one of the hooks at an angle and go under the skin with it. I have had no problem keeping the suckers alive even after being hooked a couple times since the hooks don't go in very far or deep. Interesting thought about not actually hooking the sucker, even more interesting it may be illegal.
