I just picked up one of these on a lark. Anyone ever thrown one, or know anything about it? I got one of the UV bright colors.

I picked one up a few weeks ago in silver/black. One of the muskie websites had a thread regarding the pool demo that was done in Chicago and there seemed to be a favorable impression of the bait. I want to see how deep it gets and how it suspends to see how it will be different than some of the similar cranks I already have. For $12.99 it was worth it to see what the action is like. The rattles seem fairly loud which I'm not a huge fan of when fishing many of the clear water lakes I fish but we'll see. Somebody made the statement that it is the "next double 10" which was humorous to me considering there are many baits out there very similar to the Storm Flatstick and there's no way it will have anywhere near the impact the double 10 had. For the price though, I'm sure it will be a huge hit for Storm. A few more months and I'll see if it becomes part of the rotation.
I'm glad it's suspending, Ed. Where did you find soft water to throw it?
I got the "Mossy Orange UV" version, too. I saw that same In-Fisherman episode you did, Mayhem. Of course, they're always hawking some Storm/Rapala product on that show so I take it with a grain of salt, but it does look like a nice bait, and judging from the size of the lip it does seem "twitchable".
BTW, the package IS marked (on the sides, where I didn't see it at first) "Swim depth 1-½' to 8', 8-½", 3-5/8 oz." Doesn't say if it's flaoting/suspending/sinking.
I drive by a small pond that has water pumping in and out of it every day and it is part of an apartment building. It is only about 2' deep and maybe 80 yards long but it works. I stopped in the office and asked the manager if she minded me throwing some baits in the water. She looked at me like I was an alien and said, "um, sure, I guess so". As Karma would have it another musky guy I know from town drove by and he made some casts.
I did throw the Storm bait and it seemed like a good bait with a good hang time. I also threw some of my purchases from Chicago and here was my breakdown:
10" Hellhound: looks great with a nice side to side kick but not a great belly wobble but looks good.
Wabull with rubber tail: really buoyant and will need to be fished painfully slow but the rubber tail looks good.
Truglide sunk fast and fishes like a salmo slider. Jury is out on it but it didn't have the wide side to side glide I expected.
AP glider was supposed to fish side to side and supposed to be able to fish fast. Doesn't work that well but the rubber tail looks like a propeller.
Dahlbergs wide glide did not glide side to side well and was very buoyant. Larry said it would be best to cut the feather off and maybe that will make it work better.
Whopper plopper is awesome and very loud and pushes a bunch of water and really sharp hooks.
Rubber hairy rolled on themselves and I'm very disappointed in the 2 that I got.
Kriscos are crazy good looking in the water and I wish I had bought more with rubber tails.
Double dawg looks fantastic and its is very buoyant and looks like a big ass salamander.
Hardhead looks like a monster in the water. Tail looks huge and it will be a very flexible bait.
Phantom softtail looks great in the water and Heiting told me the hellhound and softtail phantoms are the only side to side baits you will ever need.
Keep in mind that I only used one rod and a walk the dog steel leader for all these baits so I still need to play around with them. Bring on Spring!
The AP is about 7.5" and has a rubber tail on it. I think it needs to be worked real slow and the rubber bait is a twisted tullibee and I tried to throw them with a fluoro leader and one looked better but the other still rolls over on it's back. When it works right it looks good but the double dawg looks much better.
