Seriously, am I the only one that continues to think it is a HUGE mistake to even think about adding lakes to the stocking list when we don't even raise enough muskies to properly stock the lakes we have now?

Lighten up Francis… Everyone wants muskies in their back yard, including you.

We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamer of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams;
World-losers and world-forsakers,
On whom the pale moon gleams:
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world for ever, it seems.

With wonderful deathless ditties,
We build up the world's great cities,
And out of a fabulous story
We fashion an empire's glory:
One man with a dream, at pleasure,
Shall go forth and conquer a crown;
And three with a new song's measure
Can trample an empire down.

We, in the ages lying
In the buried past of earth,
Built Nineveh with our sighing,
And Babel itself with our mirth;
And o'erthrew them with prophesying
To the old of the new world's worth;
For each age is a dream that is dying,
Or one that is coming to birth.

A breath of our inspiration,
Is the life of each generation.
A wondrous thing of our dreaming,
Unearthly, impossible seeming-
The soldier, the king, and the peasant
Are working together in one,
Till our dream shall become their present,
And their work in the world be done.

They had no vision amazing
Of the goodly house they are raising.
They had no divine foreshowing
Of the land to which they are going:
But on one man's soul it hath broke,
A light that doth not depart
And his look, or a word he hath spoken,
Wrought flame in another man's heart.

And therefore today is thrilling,
With a past day's late fulfilling.
And the multitudes are enlisted
In the faith that their fathers resisted,
And, scorning the dream of tomorrow,
Are bringing to pass, as they may,
In the world, for it's joy or it's sorrow,
The dream that was scorned yesterday.

But we, with our dreaming and singing,
Ceaseless and sorrowless we!
The glory about us clinging
Of the glorious futures we see,
Our souls with high music ringing;
O men! It must ever be
That we dwell, in our dreaming and singing,
A little apart from ye.

For we are afar with the dawning
And the suns that are not yet high,
And out of the infinite morning
Intrepid you hear us cry-
How, spite of your human scorning,
Once more God's future draws nigh,
And already goes forth the warning
That ye of the past must die.

Great hail! we cry to the corners
From the dazzling unknown shore;
Bring us hither your sun and your summers,
And renew our world as of yore;
You shall teach us your song's new numbers,
And things that we dreamt not before;
Yea, in spite of a dreamer who slumbers,
And a singer who sings no more.

It was meant to put life into perspective for Scrappy.

I'm not posting numbers or lakes until I have an exact figure.

I am just glad that in the face of the states finacial ruin that we have any fish at all. I hope we can continue to aid the D.N.R. in this Iowa Program and any other program which will continue to put Muskies in current waters and or add new lakes. We have added some much needed lakes in the north west and north east sectors (Hamlin and Winyah) These were both very good choices. Scrappy, I feel for you guys over there but I have my own lakes over here that have not been stocked since 1991. At least there are fish in the Tit Chain . There is nothing in Mona but Giant Gizzard shad and carp. Blue lake is full of stunted pike and both were Tiger Musky lakes at one time. The best thing we can do is to help raise monies because without it we get nothing at all. We have to stay positive and be patient. Everyone involved knows that you and I want fish in our waters but it is done by scientific selection and placement where the state is lacking in the cases of Winyah ,Margarethe and Hamlin. We needed Musky waters in the northern sectors and now we have them. If you look at the State you can see how the Stocking are being spread out by sector . It is my belief that they are doing the best they can with the limited numbers of fingerlings available. The main problem has been and will remain the lack of funds and hatchery space to put out the numbers we would like to see.

Maybe some privatization of these hatcheies would be a good thing or at least allowing the purchase of more out of state Fingerlings by Groups such as ourselves might come into play due to these financial woes we are faced with. Remember this I have to drive over an hour to get to Osterhout . Its a dinky little puddle but its the closest lake to me. Murray is a little furthur and much better but thats it. I have zero muskies in my back yard . Mike and Michelle

Just a reminder for all…

The Iowa Program ended in 2006, 2007 is a unique year and though it sounds like we just continued the MMA/IA-DNR/MI-DNR muskie program this was NOT a continuation of this program. I know this has come up a couple times over the last month and I want to set the record straight once and for all – There is no Iowa program any longer.

The Michigan DNR does not want to continue this program because they no longer want to stock this genetically different strain (though by all accounts it appears to be a superior strain). Also, if the GLS program gets off the ground there will be nowhere to put Iowa fish in early July.

I am more than happy with Ovid Lake being a little more than an hour drive. There are a lot more opportunities available to us out there than we used to have.
Fish and enjoy.

I couldn't be happier with the lakes that have been stocked since 97. Living in Grand Rapids I now have several bodies of water that I can target within an hour drive and the future looks bright all over the state. The lakes continued with pure strains (post tiger program), were in my opinion, chosen wisely. Although many good “Tiger” lakes were passed over, I’ll settle for Campau, Murray, and Austin any day (not to mention 5 or 6 other easy day trips). As Kingfisher pointed out we should all be exited and grateful that lakes in the northern portion of the state are getting some fish. The state needed to be balanced out. Those of you in the middle of the state (Titty chainers) in any direction you can stick quality fish. Not to mention a chain that will get supplemental stockings as well as give up FAT trophy fish in the back yard (FINALLY 3228 @ 11.5, so there!!!!) All I have to do to pump myself up in the winter is ponder possibilities in lakes such as Hamlin, Margrethe, Winyah, and many others now…. These lakes are diverse bodies of water and will add variety to the selection of naturally occurring waters in the north. Now we’ve got GLSers, natural, and stocked to the north with good chances at those fish maybe reproducing. Five years ago I wasn’t all that excited about buying land in Northern MI, I am now! The lakefront communities and sportsman in the area will be educated and practice CPR. Where as current ideologies in the northern section of MI preach that anything over 36" goes on the wall and dark house notes are shared from TC to the Indian River Chain. The state needs muskies to the north and will rely on MMA to see that they are respected and protected. So yeah, I fish the western area and I’m glad to see 850 go to Dianne and the rest to Sanford because its not THAT far and its MY state. Don’t ever wanna hear “to close to Indy or Wisc boarder “(Dianne)(UP border lakes), we’ve never fished Tipp, Webb, and BarB // the NORTHWOODS?? Come on! We’re all in this together at a time when a good portion of reducing the state budget is being raped from our DNR, not to mention VHS in the mix. So hats off for 4000 little fish that swam away from the tanks recently and kudos to anyone who had even the slightest role in getting them here.

Will, do you/Iowa/anyone have any feedback on the size that the Iowa strain can grow to be in their old age? Any reports of 50-inch fish? 55-inch fish?

How about over 50 pounds? This is an Iowa fish from Mille Lacs.
