Went to the Secretary of State to get the new sticker, because mine will run out at the end of the month. They said I can't get that until July when my tabs are due. So I stopped at the DNR Headquarters just west of Chelsea. I asked the gal what do I do between Jan 1 and July. She said this is a transition year for this. The rangers will look at your sticker 2010 and the tabs on your vehicle and cut you slack and not write tickets. Then in July when I renew my tabs, the only difference in the tab will be a tiny p on it. And you should be good to go for state parks & DNR launches and only pay $10.00 Instead of paying $24 for a annual State Park and $24 for a DNR launch annual.

Even though I already had a 2010 State Parks sticker which, like Steve said, will get me into state parks until my car registration is due next June, I bought the $10 "Recreation Pass" in October from the park office at Sleepy Hollow anyway. The Parks people thought I was crazy, but did it for me anyway. They gave me a little window sticker to put where the old parks sticker went.

Next June, I'll add the Recreation Pass fee to my license plate renewal. Even with this double payment, I'm paying less for 2011 than the $26 I payed last year. I figure our state parks can use all the help they can get. Cool Lord knows I get waaaay more than my $26-worth from S.H.S.P. every year!

The gal at the DNR Headquarters didn't tell me about the Rec Pass!! I thought this whole thing was going to be another sticker on your plate, not on your tab.

Nope. If you pay the $10 Recreation Pass fee, you just get a little "P" on the usual sticker you place on your license plate when you renew it:

Today I bought two of the small $10 tabs (truck & car) from my local Muskegon State Park office that stick to the normal place inside the lower right windshield. My birthday was in October, but the wife had paid by mail and did not get the license tab, thus my trip to the park office. Next year I'll be back on track with the license plate tab.
