Since I've been getting a number of requests lately for info on St Clair I thought I would try something different. This is a seminar I did for one of the chapter meetings. This is a basic outline and we can do a Q/A to fill in the blanks between slides.

Thanks a ton Will, for us who cant make the meetings this is a nice help for planning our trips. We are all set for 5 days 3rd thru the 7th. We will be launching out of stoney point though so probably wont check out any of those spots on our first trip. Several questions though. When do the White bass spawn and where? Do any of these areas relate to this spawn? Creeks Rivers? Last. Do you cast the Dumps? Kingfisher

The White bass spawn is typically over by the time muskie season rolls around. This is true for most of the common muskie forage out on LSC. Instead of where they spawn you have to consider where/what the forage like to eat when looking for concentrations.
There are some casting spots in the dumping grounds but they are very hit or miss. I can't seem to find any rhyme or reason to the timing, which has been very frustrating. Particularly because the longest muskie I've ever seen, anywhere, was out in the dumps.
The north end offers seemingly endless casting water that is fishable with nearly any craft. Slides 7, 8 and 9 mark some great casting water. I wouldn't advise trying to fish them all at the same time. The slides are basically broken into areas that you can fish in about 6 hours. For instance; the spots on slide 7 and slide 8 are roughly 8-9 miles apart. If you are used to fishing smaller water (under 2500 acres) don't be tempted to run all over. By breaking the areas into sizes that you are used to you'll learn the water faster and be more sucessful. Don't neglect trolling a shallow crank or spinnerbait to learn these areas faster, it will allow you to identify pinpoint spots so you can come back and cast.
My question is how far do I have to travel from the launch at selfridge to good casting water? or should we put in at another launch? and hows the boat traffic on weekdays?
Travel depends on the day. If there's a chance it will get rough or with a smaller boat, I would put in near where you want to be. Weekday traffic is almost nothing, even in the middle of summer, I've seen Harley with 5-10 rigs in July/August. That said, here are some distances to each location noted on the map.
Selfridge to Salt River = 2.5 miles
Selfridge to Frog Creek = 7 miles
Selfridge to A-Buoy = 3.8 miles
Selfridge to Bouvier Bay (Swan Creek) = 11.75 miles
Selfridge to Grass Island = 8.5 miles
Selfridge to Strawberry Island = 8.5 miles
Fairhaven to Swan Creek = 1.25 miles
Fairhaven to Marsac Creek = 5 miles
Fairhaven to Grass Island = 4.75 miles
Harley Ensign to Salt River = 4 miles
Harley to Grass Island = 6 miles
Harley to Frog Creek = 6 miles
Harley to Swan Creek = 10 miles
Harley to Strawberry Island = 4 miles
I just noticed that I didn't put Harley on the access site slide. This is at the south end of Anchor Bay on S River Rd, it's out on the point at the mouth of the Clinton River. This is the primary launch I use because I don't mind the run and there's almost never a wait to launch or retrieve since there are 18 ramps with 9 docks, compared to Selfridge with only eight lanes.
Sorry to pry for "more" information, but are these casting locations on the northeren side of the lake good all season, or just early on or in fall. I have heard in July and the early part of August the majority of fish are cruising open water. Is this true? Or can some still be caught fishing weeds in mid summer? – Adam
No problem, ask away, that's why I posted this instead of answering e-mails and PM's – I thought we could put this out here for everyone to ask and learn a little about casting on LSC. If there are questions that are too specific, which might pi$$ off someone in my circle of trust, I'll find a way to answer them without getting myself kicked out of my own circle.
These general locations are good all year, you'll need to keep track of the fish movements. The concentrations of fish will move around the bay and into the channels but there are many contributing factors. There are also resident populations of muskies in all areas that stay put and aren't nomads. Water temp dictates movement into the channels generally and the fabled mayfly hatches in mid-summer bring all kinds of forage into the bay. I realize this is contrary to the old theory that all the fish spawn in Anchor Bay then move down to mid-lake and to the Canadian side.
You'll also need to remember that all weeds are not created equal. The fish will show a preference for certain weed types or certain weeds in a certain depth. One day they're on cabbage in 6', the next they're on milfoil in 3' and the next they're on eel grass outside cabbage in 8'. Obviously, they don't always change from day to day but there are obvious movements that we've noticed.
Last summer when the trolling bite was dismal on the Canadian side and mid-lake for most people we were catching some big fish on the north end. I'll never say that the caster will near the numbers that some of the trolling boats put up BUT there is always good casting on the north end. There are other areas on the south end of the lake that are good at certain times but none are as consistent as the north end.
Like the King's, we'd have to go there for a few day stretch. Can't justify a one dayer. I have never laid eyes on that water. We've been in rough stuff up in McGregor Bay that made for a long wet ride back to the lodge. 13 miles of 3 footers plus. I think the boat could handle the north end. Can you name one map that is better than any other of st clair? Shows best detail? Sportsman's Connection offer one? thanks, Bruce.
