Not directly related to this but, a few weeks back came across an article on crsigslist about a guy renting his shanty for "trophy pike and musky spearing" on torch. I left him a message asking what the point in killing a musky was and he responded with some rather rude comments claiming to have killed several fish thus far. When I messaged him back informing him of the musky tag law he recanted quickly saying he meant to say he killed northern…..I'd like to spear him.

I don't believe that fish was even very close to 42", do you think? Looked like a mid to upper 30's to me, but I could be wrong.
I have no idea but that brings up an important point. When you allow something like spearing where the fish is dead before it can be measured size limits as a management tool essentially go out the window. It would be like asking deer hunters to not shoot anything under 130 pounds. An expert spearer with a ton of experience can prolly tell + or – 2 inches like we can with a follow but what about the beginners or the people that mainly spear smaller pike and have never seen a fish over 36". And how do they get that experience without killing fish? And then there is the misidentifications and the I just don't care group of muskie spearings.
