Good tips from chemi, I also prefer melting over the Mend-it chemical or super glue options. You will find that repairing rubber baits is an art though, and takes some practice to get just right. Then pretty soon you will be Frankensteining extra legs, arms, tentacles, testicles, and whiskers all over the place.
Whenever I have to reattach a tail (or add an appendage) I like to melt extra support "struts" across and over the joint after it's joined. Can't ever have too much. Use any ol extra rubber pieces you have laying around.
I like to do my repairs on the water and either of these will get you going quickly. One word of caution, be careful when heating plastisol with a flame. Plastisol has a low melting point and will ignite easily if you're not careful it's easy to burn boat carpet, clothing, etc.

This one is much easier since it stands up and allows you to work with both hands.

The one I have from Radio Shack can be used either as a torch or a soldering iron, for $22. You can bring a butter knife in the boat and use this to heat it.
