Good news is that only one of these fish were kept (third one down). Another good point is the one kept is the first fish kept by the angler and his friends in six years of fishing the lake. I actually know the angler and his friends and have been exchanging messages with them a little here and there about muskies so information is definitely spreading.

I've seen these posts. The guys seems like a muskie friendly guy and took a pretty good beating for not keeping the fish in the first 2 pics. He was actually accused of being a member of PETA. The unbelievable ignorance of some people who keep fish "because the state says I can" is starting to bother me more and more. I usually try to keep my mouth shut on these forums but sometimes I just have to say something.

Im pretty sure the guy that gave him a hard time was just trying to ruffle feathers and I think he was banned from the site. The fish were not long enough to keep anyways as both were 38", but the guy does seem really musky friendly and most likely would have released them if they were legal size. Here is the thread is people are wondering:

The comment was a classic though…
"we eat steelhead, salmon, trout, walleye, pike.. there just another fish. and they taste sooo good!"

How long do those other fish take to reach legal size? How widespread are those other species?

Just another example of how UNeducated the general public is when it comes to Muskies.

Yes. Even though I hate seeing a fish kept, these guys have caught many other muskies and have released them. I'm in a little messaging conversation with one of the anglers and he is definitely interested in learning about these fish and had many questions about population, reproduction, musky's diet, etc. They are not the kind of guys who are just catching and keeping everything but this was a pretty nice fish and the angler is getting it mounted. I talked to him about reproductions but the prices he got from the taxidermy place were $550 for a skin mount and $720 for a replica so I can definitely see trying to save $200 even though he probably didn't know the price difference until after the fact. He did talk about one of those 'old timers' out there fishing for bluegills that complained about muskies eating all the fish so I gave him some info and stats that show otherwise so hopefully he can try to pass on that info a little bit. Just think about it though, he usually fishes with 5-10 other guys so he will probably tell them some of the information who could in turn tell 5-10 other people each and before you know it we have 50-100 people that know a little bit more about muskies. Also, I am more worried about random Jon Doe catching a musky through the ice than Jon Doe catching a musky not through the ice cause I feel ice fishermen are more catch-and-keep anglers so it never hurts to have some ice fishermen friends with a little information about muskies.

I wonder where he got the prices from. One of the taxidermists name that I hear a lot is Naber. I got a price from him for my Webster fish and he was $150 more than Lax or Fittante.

He is getting it done at Nabers. I'm not sure where he got the 720 from because a one sided reproduction at LAX would be around 580 since the fish was 45".

Yeah, Naber's is WAY more expensive. That makes sense that he is $140 more than Lax. He doesn't make his own fish. He buys the mold according to the dimensions you give him.

I wonder if he was just going to sub mine out to someone else then. I went there with a couple pics and one of his employees gave me a price. [smilie=shrug.gif]
