I forgot I even had this reel. Someone bought this for me 17 – 20 years ago. I think I spooled it up with 10 or 12lb mono, made a few casts with it and never used it again. Gear ratio 5.1.1 .Could this thing stand up to muskie fishing or is it a kiddie toy?

What is it? Is it a bass reel? I don't remember that model.

It's a low-profile baitcaster c. 1996:

wow, never heard of that one… I would have thought schematic would show a butterfly emerging from inside though! What a funny, stupid name for a reel

Yup, that's it! I take it's for bass and wouldn't hold up tp ski's. I was going to sites last night and window shopping and noticed Pflueger dosen't make the round baitcaster reels anymore. Was looking at the St. Croix reels, they look nice, but no left handed.

I cant find a left handed round baitcaster anywhere unless I order one online from a dealer for max price, never for a good deal…

Right handed reels feel completely backwards to me but I guess Im just wierd like that…I never understood why most right handed people use the right handed reels when it would make alot more sense for a right handed person to cast and set the hook with their right arm…

I noticed a while back that the St Croix spinning reels are Daiwa reels (they have all the same features like Twistbuster and digigear and all the other marketing mumbo jumbo) Any ideas if the casting reels are too???I didn't see too many similarities but I am sure someone makes them for them.

Matt, don't feel weird I'm right-handed and use left-handed, just more comfortable. I can use both, but prefer left. My favorite is the Abu 5501C3. They do have left-handed reels at Cabelas, Rollie&Helens, Thorne Bros. I feel I can get my hand on the handle faster (wonder why I fry the clutches in my reels!!) and a better hook set.

Your dominant hand is the hand you want to reel with, think of it like trying to line up gun sights with your non-dominant eye.

Yes, Diawa builds the St Croix reels.

It would hold up to the fish it's the lures it can't handle. A 5:1 bass reel is a very slow retreive probably in the neighborhood of 21" per turn, which is slow even for twitch baits. The line capacity is also minimal, even with 65#. However, those little bass reels make decent jig reels when using finesse jigs like a lizard, reaper, etc. w/ a 1/4 to 3/4 oz head when used w/ a flippin stick.

I was a die-hard spinning reel guy three years ago; I had never used a baitcaster before. I didn't think I'd like using a reel that had a handle on the right, and had always casted using my right arm.

On Will's advice, (and after pi$$ing some people around here off with my intractability, I've been told) I learned (very quickly, much to my own surprise, and in less than a day) how to two-hand cast a baitcaster left-handed, and so now there's absolutely no wasted motion having to move the rod from hand-to-hand in order to use a right-handed reel. My left hand stays on the reel, right hand on the butt-end, and when I finish the cast, the right hand is ready to reel in right away. Now I can't imagine doing it any other way.

Try it and you may surprise yourself, as I did.

I dont see what benefit it is to reel with your dominant hand tho. It doesnt take much strength to reel, it takes much more strength to throw a bait and to set the hook and to fight the fish with the rod.

I think it also has alot to do with me growing up on a spinning reel reeling with my left hand…hard to kick 20+ years and 100 million hours of repetition

I grew up on spinning reels too, but cannot see myself using a left handed bait casting reel as it would just be weird for me. Who really cares though, if you are more comfortable reeling with a left handed bait casting reel then do it. I am more comfortable reeling with my right hand with bait casting reels. Different strokes for different folks.

Very true…what feels most confortable to you is all that really matters

Half on half off topic…this reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend recently about hockey. Most hockey players (like fisherman) are right hand dominant but play left handed which is how my friend plays, however, I am right hand dominant and play right handed. If you ever pay attention to an NHL game, like 80% of the players play lefty, I never really understood it since I am the opposite. Just another case of to each his own but I wonder why it is so much of a majority lefties, much like majority of lefty baitcasters…

Sorry to get get your topic so off topic Steve

You sure got your money's worth of the smiley guys. I do everything right-handed, throw, bat & hockey. But I do have right handed reels. So I guess this spring I'll go down to the neighbors pond and try to do it the right way. All I can think of is big time backlashes!! Embarassed
