Shimano Calcutta VBS

I have a Shimano Calcutta 201b. I am having a problem with the variable braking system on it. It has 8 brakes you can set on or off. I usually keep it set with all but one of the brakes set to off. This gives me the best casting distance I can get without any backlashes.

For some reason the reel will not stay in this setting. After several casts with 1 brake set in the on position, one or more of the other brakes will pop into the on position which limits my casting distance considerably and I have to manually turn off the other brakes again and again. It happens very frequently and takes unecessary time away from fishing. Has anyone else run into this problem and does anyone know how to fix it so that the VBS keeps the setting I want at just 1 brake on?

Thanks.

Sounds like you may need a new "plastic thingy" Have you tried it with different "brakes" in the outer setting? I never ran in to that trouble when i owned calcuttas.

Yeah I have tried that but it seems like the same 2 or 3 will pop out into the on setting after several casts no matter which one starts in the on position.

By new "plastic thingy" do you mean the little plastic brakes themself or the whole plastic break system that holds the little brakes?

I was thinking just the brakes.

Just remove them so they can't slide around. I'm pretty sure the only purpose of them being in the reel, if they aren't in use, is so they are stored somewhere safe.
