Curious if there are any Michigan Row Trollers on the site? I've been doing some reading on this lately and it has been enticing me for some time. I'm thinking of pursuing a craft this spring (very basic and probably cheap, less traditional than the specific // original models) Just want to get some local info if its out there. Finding a ton of old school nastolgic N. Wisconsin stuff. Any sources, web sites, books, dvd suggestions are welcome. Thanks [smilie=biggrin.gif]

A few years back when I was up in WI., I got to see two guy's out row trolling. I stopped and watched them for a half hour, really interesting. I was hoping a fish would hit to see what they do, cause they have so many lines out. I don't know if there is a club in WI. for row trolling that you could get info abou it. Steve

I've got a fiberglass square back canoe w/ oarlocks that I've been meaning to set up as a row troller for about ten years.

Adam – It would be cool to get a small group together to experiment with this. It sounds really fun to me!!

This would be cool! I started out my musky fishing in Vilas county, WI. and would regularly stop and check out row trollers that were for sale. Some beautiful boats indeed! I've always thought it would be gerat fun to try, especially in a deep, clear cisco based lake.

Hi Guys, I had to go on an excercise plan this summer and did a lot of row trolling for pike. I have a 16 foot meyers sport pal canoe with oar locks. Its not a row trolling boat but I can get Pike to hit while row trolling with it. Ill tell you all this , unless you have a skinny light boat that slices through the water it will be a lot of work. My sport pal is a little too wide in the middle. Study Pat Strutz boat. She is a little girl and can get that boat moving at 3.5 mph or better. The hull layout is the key . Long and skinny with a flat bottom kind of like those speed rowing boats. Maybe we could do a row trolling adventure to Vilas county Wisconsin eh?? Mike and Michelle

Someone should invent a leg-powered paddlewheel troller…

I cheat and use a electric 50# MinnKota on my 12' seanympth. Works fantastic for trolling highlines for steelhead on calmer days.

Hemi-they did, its called a paddle boat 🙄 Just kidding, a leg powered canoe like machine would rock, you're right.

I suspected that a traditional "row boat" of the 12ft-16ft aluminum variety would have too wide of a beam (weight) to get any speed out of for those warm water speeds…..In fact I was more interested in square back, fiberglass set ups (Old Town and other co.s make, Will mentioned this) Something that can be hand carried by two //80-120lbs or so….Ideally I would like to have a set-up for two, but also capable to be launched by one (without a trailer) in the bed or on top of a vehicle. Also this would be easier to sell to the wife being a more versitle craft that could river float, camp w us, and just take out for a stroll. These closest resemble what I've seen from the originals and the reproductions out there. A buddy of mine has one and I will try it out this sping before I buy.

Mike-Do you think I can get a 21" deep threat to stay down behind these crafts [smilie=2thumbsup.gif]

Maybe if enough people dabble and tinker with this in the next few years we can fill the void for a monthly event, or [smilie=brows.gif] get an additional point in Match Fishing if someone is crazy enough to try and row one up. Fun Stuff to think about in the off season….

Pat strutz pulls 14 inch Legend Plows. I doubt that anyone person could tow a 21 inch Deepthreat though rowing. It would act like an anchor ha ha ha .

But there are lures that work great at slow speeds and are perfect for Row trolling. I designed a CLAW for the Wisconsin guys last year. It is an 8 inch hardwood crank built from Cherry wood. It has wild action at 2.9 mph and will blow out at higher speeds. Also a weighted version that suspends when casting. This lure will be in Chicago this year and will marketed to the Row trolling crowd.

Also Tuff Shads, Brads Badd Shads and my little Rippin Shads all do well at under 3 mph. The trick to getting bit row trolling is to use lures that panic at slower speeds. Baits like Lokes and Slashers, Jakes and Grandmas have to be pulled at speeds over 3 mph to be effective unless they have been modified. Mike

Cool I detuned it. I made it so it wanted to turn right. That way it was climbing up on one side at a slow speed. Heck, I just barely got the boat in gear and went maybe 20 ,30 yards. I had my other rod in my hand when it hit. Man I would like to see that pig this year. Ill bet she is pushing 50 inches. and even fatter. Mike

I've heard about lots of fish caught on baits like Jakes, Grandmas and Deptrraiders.

With the right boat rowing a big bait wouldn't be bad at all. Once you have a heavy wood boat with a big keel going one direction it wants to keep going that direction.
