Broke the rod tip on a St. Croix Premier/PM70MHF, just ordered a replacement tip from St. Croix, should be here by the end of the week or next. Has anyone replaced one of these and can give me some tips? Thanks for any help. Steve

It is epoxied on, heat it gently and pull the old tip off.

DON'T overheat the tip because you can melt the epoxy that holds the graphite together.

Then epoxy the new tip in place.

You want tip tips, eh? 😀

Only time I've ever done it is with a Fuji kit I bought for a few bucks, and it came with hot-melt glue stick that worked OK. Heat the tip (another tip!) of the glue stick with a match or lighter until it's semi-liquid, put a good amount on the broken tip, and put the new tip on the tip quickly while the glue is still soft. Some glue will ooze out of the tip, which can be mostly wiped off the tip while it's still soft, or removed carefully later, being careful not to scratch the tip near the tip.

The rod tip eye seperated (i stepped on it), about a year ago, so I straightened it out and glued the two pieces together, it lasted a year. So let me get this straight, I'll wrap some shop towels around the rod and stick it in a vice. Grab the rod tip with needle nose plyers, heat it up with a bic and pull it off. They said something about powered glue, what is this? Do I clean the end of the rod off? Do you sprinkle this powered glue on, stick the rod tip on and heat it up? Also I asked them about there reels, cause everyone said good things about them. I'm supposed to call them back in a couple of weeks, cause they are supposed to come out with left handed reels. I'm right handed, but use a left handed reel, easier for me! Steve

Steve, Michelle has three of the St. Croix reels and we have had super luck with them. Zero problems. She has both the 250 and the 300. Mike

"Powered" glue? I assume you meant "powdered" glue, which I know nothing about, but I'd assume you'd add water to it, not melt it.

I just did one myself. The new tip will come with a powder glue and instructions. Real easy, no need for a vise.

Steve,

A couple of things:
-Near Toledo there are (2) guys who work at Janns Netcraft that will rewrap the tip and I have used them before and they charge about $10.

-You may want to think about upgrading your rod through the St. Croix upgrade program…maybe a longer rod.

-I have left hand reels and I like Simano Calcutta TE's (watch ebay for used ones) and I like my Abu Garcia 7001i (about $110) for big baits and if I get a new reel I may look at the Okuma Induron because I hear they are good and Okumas customer service is excellent.

I really like my $99 Pflueger Trion 66's. They sell them at Gander as their own Gander Guide Series 66, too.
