I have retired and my wife Gloria and I are moving to Vilas County, Wisconsin. We will be members of the Muskies, Inc. chapter in Minocqua. We are going to give this a couple of winters and see if we can handle it at our age. If it is too rugged, we will be back!
Although the Bemidji MN area is I think the premier muskie area (Plantagenette, Bemidji, Big, Mantrap, as well as Leech), my wife likes the smaller lakes and the Vilas/Oneida county area has a bunch of small waters that are very pretty and have the mid-30's fish with a shot at the bigger fish. Michigan has some very good water and the Great Lakes program will result in some big, fat fish in a few years. I hope you guys will see some of these big girls.
I have met some fine individuals in the club and I can't just leave the area without acknowledging people like Scott, Charlie, Joe, Jason, Mike, Jon, Dave and many others who have made it fun to be on the water. And Will has been an exceptional individual, a constant and strong driver for Michigan much as Gil Hamm was for Minnesota.
I will miss those big thick brown backs of Murray Lake but maybe we can find some big brown backs in the northwoods of Wisconsin.
Man Larry I'm jealous. Scott told me at the Bruce you were moving, sorry I have not gotten into the store lately to chat before you leave, but good luck!
I've driven thru minocqua several times on the way up to Canada and I think you will find a few good lakes and rivers in that area that hold some big fish.
Hope you are able to stay and enjoy it long term that is an awesome area and one I would love to live in.
Best wishes Larry. In the fall of 2007, you were the first person I met from MMA before I joined. Congrats on retirement and the new opportunities awaiting you. By the way, I still think of your lure lost near the water ski course on Murray, but I'm not losing anything else trying to get it back!
