I just got off the phone with St. Croix.I got the Big Buck tail Kit from St. Croix for the old 250 reels. We have two all rebuilt now. 5.1 to 1 ratio. This is the Jim Saric kit. Better gears and the power handle. As little as she is going to use it I dont think she will burn it up. I am in the market for an 8 foot rod for her with the right stuff for double tens. For now she will use her 7'6" premier heavy but admits she would like a longer rod for those lures.
Im going to get a saltist for me as soon as I sell these damned Records. Mike

[quote="Kingfisher"]Will, what model Saltist do you have and what is the gear ratio? Dan, Ill keep that offer in mind. Im sending request to Jim Saric for information on upgrades to the St. Croix reels that he uses. Mike
I have the 20LW, Dad uses the 30LW. She's welcome to try it out any time were on the water together.
You may want to get in touch with the guy on Muskie First that does reel work, he'll know more (Chuck I think). Could also check with Daiwa since I believe the St Croix reels are still built by Daiwa.
Richard Shmitz aka PIKEMASTER. He knows his stuff, and is the only one who works on mine. Jim Saric also sends all his reels to him to be maintained and serviced.
We already have tons of double 8's. Mostly Shumway Flashers and lots of our own. I am getting some Boo Dadly's in double 8's as well. They are good producers. But even they give her some trouble on long days of burning them in. Power handles will help and throwing them on the right rod as well. We are looking hard right now at the Okuma's . Most likely will be ordering a couple of them real quick here. Mike
Mike, I have a Shimano Curado 201E7 that I am trying to get rid of. Its a low-profile casting reel I bought brand new 3 years ago and I have only used it a handful of times. I swapped it for a Calcutta 200 on my pike rod so I have no use for it anymore. Was planning on putting it up for sale on ebay but Ill give it to you in trade for some Talonz baits if it is the right type of reel you are looking for. Let me know if youre interested.
Thanks to all of you who have put in on this post. We did get a kit from St. Croix ordered to upgrade one of her St. Croix 300 reels. I have an offer for two rods from Tackle Industries that is going to be hard to pass up. the 8.6 and 9 foot EXH Telescoping. The price is way good and cant touch any other rod in that class. Does anyone have any bad experiences with the Tackle industries rods? The Okuma is also looming large right now. The tackle industry rod is very light. that is a huge plus. I am going to get A Saltist for myself. I ordered parts to build 24 new double ten bucks. Any suggestions on top producing colors? The first one I build is going to be Chartruse and black with Silver blades. 23 to go. Mike

Does this reel have the extra reel mount for stability?

Yes, it comes with it… mine sits in the box still. It doesn't need it because we're not catching 100+ pound fish with the drag maxed out. That and the fact that it won't work with a reel seat that has a trigger.

I might have to get one of those then. I have an Okuma cortez right now and that extra locking thing really bugs me as it digs into my arm while holding the rod by the foregrip.

Is the Cortez loose in the reel seat loose without the wrap lock?

Anyone remember those? That was bought at the shop down in North Webster back in 95 I think.
I pulled it out of the closet, cleaned/tuned it put a new handle on it and put it back.
I might actually start using it again.
As a comparison how big the reel/handle is this is a Bass Premier with the same handle.

W e got the Tackle Industry 9 foot telescoping Rods. They are very cool. Light enough for Michelle . I put one together with an Abu C-3 equipped with a record power handle and tossed some double 10's off my dock. The set up worked great and took loads of strain off this old mans arms and back. Now we just need the rebuilt reels back and the power handle for Michelle's St croix 300. Almost ready . Thanks again for all the help. Mike and Michelle

Will, does your saltist have a level wind? If not do you have any trouble with line piling up on one side or the other? Mike
My burning bucktail reel doesn't have a levelwind and I have no problem with line bunching up on one side. The main thing is to get it started on the reel correctly and then the line should fall into place nicely. It is really easy to cast as well so I don't have any trouble with it.
yea, the bad news was adam said it took him over a month to even respond back to him the first time it broke and he contacted him several times too I believe.
He has always been good to me about some of his lures that have fallen apart before ive even caught a fish lol, but im about done with his products as well.
He denied one of his superD's would never fall apart a certain way, and i told him and he just never responded
Guys, James is a great guy with awesome customer service. He is also one of our sponsors, which means he has given us money or products that help make muskie stocking possible in Michigan. He helps every great cause in every state when it comes to fish or kids. I find it hard to believe that he takes awhile to respond to anyone whether they have good our bad news. He always responds to emails. Even multiple times throughout the day. As far as his rods go, yes, I've heard of some breaking. But, if he replaces them free of charge, so what! So you get a new rod every year. I think we should ease back on product bashing a fuzz. [smilie=2c.gif]
