Drain, or not to drain?
2005 Mercury 75 four stroke.
Do you guys treat the fuel in the tank making sure its run through the carbs or do you run the motor out of fuel storing it with no fuel in the motor at all? Gas in the tank has been treated with Stabil back in August when I last tanked up. 34 gallon tank, 5 gallons left in it. Been told 10 different ways to store your motor and would appreciate your good and bad experiences. Lower unit serviced, new oil and filter, new plugs, and fuel filter just completed. I don't trust the dealer, I think they need more service business.
Thanks
I hate stabil. I never use it. I run most of the gas out and leave just a little . I dont let it sit long enough to have the gas go bad. You will find there are more problems with winter gear that sits for 9 months in hot conditions and humidity than boat motors that sit for 60 to 90 days in cold weather. I have a 115 Merc 4 stroke and MERC sayS If I use stabil they will void MY warranty. You are supposed to use some kind of merc treatment. Probably the same thing. I have been through the merc warrantee system and will tell you that you must do what ever they say or your warranty means squat. If its past the warranty and you are already using stabil you are probably wise to keep using it. Putting stabil in an old motor, well lets just say it loosens everything up and gums up everything. Been there done that. Never again. I have had three different small engine mechanics tell me not to use Gasoline stabilizers because they ruin seals and gaskets but what do they know right? My snow blower is on its 5th year with no stabil. I drain the carburator and the tank evry spring. No problems at all. We put stabil in the leaf blower and we cant get it to run. CHANGE THE LOWER UNIT oil PRIOR TO FREEZE UP ALONG WITH TRAILOR BEARINGS. Ill be fishing in December and March so I dont worry about bad gas in my boats. Kingfisher
