I was under the impression retailers were supposed to offer the tag to all, not having to ask.
No, there is not a prompt in the system. The person buying the license is supposed to ask the retailer for the license(s) they need. Heck, I certainly wouldn't trust anyone to sell me what I need. Most retailers don't have a clue.
Prior to the tag, I had purchased licenses in just about every type of retail shop that sold them. I was routinely asked if I wanted "all species" or "limited /a regular fishing license." I agree, it is the angler's responsibility to know the rules and regulations, but it seems the DNR could have sent a e-mail attachment reminding retailers to ask? Just that it's the first time this has ever been done? At least for the first year…….I'm not certain, but I would bet questions were posed to the anglers purchasing a license (ie trout stamps) when stocking was initiated for trout and salmon.

Trust me, they did.
Of course you were asked if you wanted a restricted or all species, they have to select one or the other. Have you ever been asked if you wanted a sturgeon tag?
Each season all retailers get information on changes to the licensing system and changes to regulations. They also get boxes of fishing/hunting/special season guides but just like anglers that don't read the fishing guide retailers ignore the information they get.
I guess my point is with all of the effort that went into the New regs, it seems common sense would be to install a prompt in the system? If "they did" ask when major regs changed in the past, why not now? Just looking for ways to better the system. People are busy, lazy (sometimes ignorant), seems a simple reminder at the register was an opportunity lost for the first year.

There's never been a prompt with any new fishing regulation that I can recall. This is not a required item so there wasn't going to be a prompt, though it was requested. I wanted the question asked with every license purchase, a simple yes/no and following a yes – do you intend to harvest a muskie with your tag.

Gotcha, well thanks for trying….. I realize how hard you guys fought to get the changes, wish the MDNR would install the software changes to assist with awareness in all hunting and fishing. Either way, back to the topic at hand…native GLS muskies in river mouth lakes along the NW shore exist in catchable populations, during certain times I think some people would be surprised what they could find IMO . I just don't have the time…..I would guess it is more likely a native fish than GB, pretty cool either way. My wife's dad grew up fishing the PM, literally, for subsistence ( poor ) and he saw plenty in his day.
