I'm thinking of hitting the Paint below the Little Bull dam and floating into Peavy. It looks like this is a man made waterway so I'm curious how the fishing would be. If anyone has any info for that stretch it would help a lot or should I just fish above the dam?

We have fished it in crystal Falls and from Peavy pond. There are launches in Peavy pond. We fished the mouth the of both rivers(Michigamme and the Paint). We used the launch at the end of Lake Mary rd/Peavy pond road. There is another launch at Little Bull/Frickeltons rd. It has been a long time since we have been there. We were able to launch our 18 ft.Starcraft with our van. We have a roller trailer and from what I remember it was pretty rough. . The crystal falls part of the paint has some real nice fish in it. We used our smaller boat in there and had a blast. The launch is right in crystal falls. Just ask at the bait shop for directions. Mike and Michelle

No doubt fish move through the diversion canal between Little Bull & Peavy, and you can safely navigate the thing by boat no trouble. Going through the dam is a little hairy though, and there are some rocks sorta right in the way when going through. But its a neat experience. But as far as actually fishing in the canal itself I don't think it should be too high on your list. Shallow, flat, featureless.

So you've basically got like 100's of miles of the most spectacular scenery, structure, and habitat with good fish populations that you could ever ask for anywhere including Canada. And then you've got this 1.5 mile stretch of man-made crap in between.

Of course that probably means there is a rogue channel monster or 50 that just like to break all the rules about where muskies live that boats fly past at 40 mph. Because that's what muskies do.

But everything else in the real Paint River and in any of the impoundments downstream is definitely worth fishing though. For a fun little break you can do some dam hopping too- walk downs for shore fishing below all the dams.
