Options for a lost rod guide insert?

My St. Croix rod has a missing aluminum oxide insert for one of the rod's guides, and I HATE the idea of spending $40-$60 to send it back to WI for repair, since I'm already deep in the doghouse with SWIMBO for spending too much on fishing gear this year (and my other St. Croix rod is broken, too, from my own stupidity!).

Anyone know if replacement guide inserts are available? The metal part of the guide looks OK; only the insert is gone. Are there other options?

If you can make it through the season I could pick up the rods at the lure swap and bring them down to the guy at Janns Netcraft. He usually fixes these for around $10-$15 and does a great job and you would never know the difference. We could then meet to drop them off or I could bring them to the banquet. You can also call local tackle places (especially fly fishing folks) and see if anyone there does rod repair.

Failing a better option you could buy a new guide and then take the insert out of it and superglue it in place. I have done this and it seems to work okay. like you say the idea if sending it out is not attractive.

Thanks, Ed. We'll see.

Actually, what I hoped for is what Kevin suggested. Where did you get the new guide? The insert has to be the right size, or it won't have a chance of working. I don't see why gluing/epoxying a new insert can't work.

Check with Grand River Bait and Tackle. I think they do rod repair or they have someone that picks them up. You should be able to get it repaired right for less than $15.

Yes, Al at Grand River works on rods. You have to go to the fly shop next door. They are closed on I believe Sundays and Mondays and are open the rest of the week 10-6. Nice guys, just hope you're not allergic to cigarette smoke [smilie=biggrin.gif]

Last Sat. I took both the rod with the missing guide insert and another rod I'd cracked by lifting it when it was hung under a cleat (it was in the rain from that leftover hurricane back in Sept. 🙄 ), and asked to have both rods repaired.

It's supposed to cost a whole $6 for each repair… 😯 I don't know how they make any money, but I'm not complaining! [smilie=2thumbsup.gif]

I'll post again when I get them back, hopefully before the Bruce Mem. this weekend, and report on the repair quality.

Well, here are the repairs.

First, the guide repair (replaced the guide) on my St Croix Premier 7.5 ft:

” />

And the broken shaft repair on my St. Croix Premier 6.5 ft:

Both repairs together cost me $12, out-the-door, and took ten days (a person at the shop said it would have been done sooner, but the wife of the guy who does it was in the hospital, and he was a little behind as a result). 😯

The guide looks as good as the original St. Croix workmanship, and the broken shaft appears perfectly straight. This is a 6.5 ft St. Croix Med heavy Premier rod that I don't use much, so I'm not too worried if it doesn't behave like new. Maybe it'll be even better, now!

Needless to say, I'm quite satisfied right now, not having used either one yet. [smilie=2thumbsup.gif]
