Hey, im trying to figure out what rod I need to build next. I have a 7' st croix pool cue, and a 9' lamiglass MH (its a saltwater blank so its like 1-6 oz lures but a moderate fast action).
I can fling big buck tails a mile with the longer rod, and it cuts the fatigue factor while reeling a ton. the shorter one i use for jerks and twitchbaits, but i have nothing for bull dawgs, cranks and some other techniques. so any suggestions would be helpful!

I would think about a heavier 8'6" rod that is a little more stout like a Big Dawg rod. An imporant lesson that I learned about my Lamiglass rod is if you have a fish follow double tens into the figure 8 that the rod needs enough backbone to set the hooks into the fish and not lose the energy in the rod.
I have a Gander Mountain Musky rod. It's 8'6" and can handle pounder Bulldawgs. (I know…I through it all night long the other night 😯 )
If you can get one on sale that would be great. I think for the price its a good deal. I have talked to some other guys in the club and they would agree. Good luck.
most of my steelhead rod builds are st croixs. i really appreciate their customer service with their blanks too, it makes it easier on me trying to warranty rods i do. I have found a couple of their blanks that would be great, like 8'-8'6" and i think 4-10 oz lures with a fast action, thats what im leaning toward. the nice thing is i can get either series blank scII or SC IV for a fair price.

[quote="Corey K"]A St. Croix Big Dawg will do alot but its pricey.
would this be something i could use big cranks or jerkbaits with? like cranking big believers, or jakes, or other deep divers for casting?
or would yet another rod be better for that kinda thing?
I have this rod and it is very versatile and throws big cranks easy, dbl 10s and I like if for topwater also. If you buy the blank and do the work yourself it would be a good rod.
Got the heavy spinner…I like the idea though.
I just got my blanks in the mail today! An 8'6" SC IV stcroix in both the sling blade and big dawg… These blanks are very nice, I can't wait to finish them, up! I tried to wait out the 9 ft-er but they are being slow!
So a couple more questions. Anyone do a spiral wrap, or use one??? and has anyone tried the spilt grip routine?, would save about 25 bucks in cork!
Next up, an 11'3" 10-20 lb…for the center pin
or maybe a 13 ft 10wt…who knows…

It would be pretty easy to make those into a 9' rod.
I've seen a few sprial wrapped and they look cool but I'm thinking it might decrease castability because the line has to wrap the rod as it leaves the reel.
Yeah, its not too hard to extend it, but not really something i like to do unless Im going to make a removeable section of the handle, like in a switch rod or a spin/fly combo or something. I was more referring that they said that st croix blank would be available 4-6 weeks after the pre built rod, and Im not sure when the rod was available, but the blank is still not…
I have several custom rods built on Ugly stick blanks one of which is all fiberglass. I have several St Croixs and like them but I do not feel IMO that the super mega graphite rods are the best for all situations I like the feel I get with Hybrid and glass rods for different situations. I also have a rod using a Graphite USA blank that I love, the B85MMAG is basically a shark rod that is hella tough all the way through the butt section. I have dead stopped the boat in the river on several occasions when hooksetting logs 🙄 anyway dont be afraid to look around for what you want [smilie=2c.gif]

Thanks, Ive got a 9' lamiglass that is a composite glass and graphite, and I love it for certain things, Its a little light for some things, which is why I went with the 2 I got… They are sold under the american tackle viper series, but made by lami. Anyhow, the major difference to me was weight of the blank, and where its distributed. The lami that is heavy enough to do what I want weighs 13+ ounces or something rediculous like that, and most of the weight is in the middle to the tip…bad combo for using it all day. I am sure Ill find something sooner or later, cuz you can never have enough rods right!?!?
I have a custom Big Dawg rod that's spiral wrapped because I sometimes use it for jigging. It hasn't affected my casting distance at all. It has been awesome and I'm very happy with it. Second, all my rods are split grip and I prefer them. I can feel the vibration of bait, structure, weeds, strikes along my rib cage when fishing. Plus it just feels so much lighter to me when fishing all day. The split grips also work good for cold weather fall fishing. Meaning, wearing big bulky clothing can get in the way and it seems to help with a split grip tucked in nice along your side and not having the "cork" sticking to clothing. The spiral wrapped guides are suppose to prevent less torque or twisting of rod in your hand when fighting fish close to the boat or boatside strikes. I really don't know how much of a difference it makes but it definetly doesn't hurt. I can cast baits with those guides just as far as any other rod or fishing partner
