This is a new leader "system" and does anyone have any thoughts on the advantages or disadvantages of this rig. It sounds like Greg Thomas developed it and I would think it would be useful in ultra clear water. What do you guys think about it?

I played w/ that a few years ago when GT first experimented w/ it. Of the benefits of the system it helping in clear water isn't one of them. Primarily. it will improve figure eights because you hear the flouro enter the rod and know to start the figure eight (really nice at night). The problem was I didn't like casting that big knot through the guides or leaving the entire leader outside the tip.

After seeing/using GT's set up I've used a variation of of this (which Ed, Jim and others have seen) by using a standard leader and nail knotting some 40# flouro on the braid about 18" above the leader. The warning of the knot coming into the guides keeps you from slamming your leader into your rod tip.

I don't really understand this leader at all. It seems to me to take away the advantages of both kind of materials it uses (fluoro and wire). Takes away the visibility factor of fluoro by having the wire and takes away the full proof bite off factor of the wire by only having a little piece of it. I'm just going to stick with a fluoro leader or a wire leader and not both.

Personally I think wire is less visible than flouro. Consider it from the angle of the fish, wire is really thin and will cast less of a shadow than 130-150# flouro.

I like the idea of feeling the knot at night as opposed to "Feeling" or seeing the lure as it approaches the boat from an anchor light..

Works great! *tick* *tick* *tick* figure 8. Only being 18" away really keeps your mind from wandering as well. First couple times, it'll make you jump a little. HAHA!!

Great Tip… I plan on night fishing quite a bit this season. Will, what exactly is "Nail Knotting"???

thanks,
Scott

I've heard of people putting a slip bobber stop on the line around 18-24" above the leader as a warning to get ready for the figure 8 while night fishing. Not sure if it works or not as I have never done it, but it seems to be the same basic concept. It might not be big enough to really get the angler's attention though.

If you've ever seen a slip float stop on a tube you've seen a nail knot.
