What I'm thinking is that if someone new walks into Gander, Cabela's and most places they aren't going to find anyone that knows what they are talking about. They will likely walk out with a bunch of stuff and a year later they will wish they never bought half of it.

What if you were just starting out but didn't know that you should be using at least 80# braided line on your muskie casting rods? Or that lure you just bought because it was suggested by some kid at Gander was probably a waste of money.

Both of these problems would be solved if gander would hire me already!!!

I really like the idea of videos for guys just getting into musky fishing. People are always asking about what is a good starter set-up for rod/reel and around 5-10 good lures to start out with. I would love to see videos on basic, but good, starter equipment for people to use. A video on a starter musky lure kit would be very helpful to people and save them a lot of money. Who would be making these videos? Will?

This doesnt really have to do with info/tips but I just think it would be cool to get a video for the MMA homepage showing kind of what MMA is. Could get pictures or video clips at different outings, meetings, fish fest, lure swap, and banquet. Maybe even get some footage from guys on here to put in there.

Yes, I'm planning on doing the video. I have the camera(s) and wireless mics for cameras etc. and a willing videographer.

I also like the idea of having a video available the shows what MMA is all about. I've got some stocking video and adding event photos to go with the video is easy.

This video that my friend Steve did with Andrew Golden of Muskie First has most stuff covered but… the sound is terrible and there's too much Q&A. The videos need to be scripted the one in the link below is too long. On the water, with live fish would have been better too…

I think we all need to remember why we joined and what we were looking for. I met Steve at Hudson and he was friendly and said there was a group of folks that shared my sickness. He said they talked about good locations, what type of gear to use and just had some excellent knowledge of muskie fishing. I thought it would be good to learn more and cut my learning curve by talking with and learning from experienced musky fisherman. Here is what I would like to see:

-Videos that covered what equipment to buy, (10) must have baits, leaders, nets, basic strategies(spring, summer, fall), what to do when you catch a fish including cutting hooks, release tools and how to work certain baits.

-I would love to see a map of MI with the Muskie lakes shown on it and even tie in GPS locations of the ramps (I have some of these and we could gather more). If people really get into muskie fishing they will become members and want to view lake reports (this was one of the main reasons I joined).

-Maybe a section called "lessons learned" where we talk about things we may have learned the hard way. I know that I have learned some things the hard way and could set my ego aside and list some so others could learn.

-My last idea would be for the members section only. It would be nice to have a sticky or special category for guys going fishing by themselves. Historically, I fish by myself and this year Jason and I fished together a couple of times and I was really able to learn some new things from him. It is much safer to fish with a partner, easier to land a fish, take a good picture and you have someone to complain to about the %*@ muskies. You could just post when you are fishing and if anyone wants to come along to PM, email or call you and you could setup times and places.

The photos that are used for the newsletter would easily work and would be pretty cool to get a fish picture from people from the club to put in there as well.

I actually just sent that video to someone one here to show the proper techniques but like you said it is too long and is a little cheesy with the fake fish lol.

Years ago, I think on the old forum we had a section called "fishermen seeking fishermen" or something like that. It wasn't a "dating" forum but was exactly what you are talking about. The reason it didn't make it on this forum is because it was never used.

We could easily add one here on the forum.

Instead just a write up about how many muskie lakes we have in Michigan, their location and if they are stocked or natural.

Maybe a link to the stocking reports by the DNR or just a sentence or two describing the lakes. Sort of what guides have on their sites describing lakes they fish. For example, could say something about ovid or murray having good numbers but not many really big fish where as a lake like Mullet having low numbers but the chance at a HUGE fish. Just something like that.

I think Jason could put together a video like this one and the clip at 2:10 is the best part:

A link to the stocking data was in the plans for sure.

I wish I had an electronic version of the map Duke built for Fish Fest. It had all 95 managed waters marked and if I remember right they were color coded if they were stocked or natural. That is really all I think we need to show or say. From there someone could post questions on the forum about specific water. As was mentioned above we don't want to show all the cards on the main site but it should be something that would draw people in and make them interested in becoming and MMA member.

I think this is a cool video except for us doing a general one for MMA and michigan musky fishing, not just one lake.

Yes, that is the idea. Professionally done video, good audio, etc.

I'm not so sure about the guy in that white Ranger 620 they filmed with though… kinda seems like a goofball. πŸ™„

I saw some really nice fish in that boat a couple weeks ago though and caught one on a figure eight that went on… and on… and on… and on… it was one of those where you have the fish going and you tell the other guy to get the net because she's going to eat.

Doesn't Duke still have it?

I would put in a Free guide trip/ looking for boat, page with any members that would be willing to take someone out for their first time. Its one thing to see the proper equipment online or pictures but its another to see feel it live.

I had that picture in field n stream and had two people call me and say they used to fish muskies but moved to the area and wanted to know if I wanted to fish. I only got to take one out, too little time money, to get the other out. we will hook up next spring. But I told both about the club and the opertunities to hook up with some people that might actually know something.

Thanks Will

When I was first starting (not that long ago) the questions you are talking about were the ones I was asking. My answer was more about what I like to read about know and wasn't as aligned with the question as it should have been.

I think we are starting to stray a little [smilie=sign-offtopic.gif] . Let's get back to the basics and ask ourselves: Why we need to upgrade the tipsinfo section. I think it's like Will said in the beginning of the post: First and formost, for the well-being of the fish. There are guys out there fishing for muskies whether we like it or not, and if we can educate them how to keep the fish alive, it's better for all. Secondly, it's to bring more people into the MMA, and showing them the difference they can make.

I am sure that will all be good information. Generally when you say something I am listening. There is no doubt you know what you are talking about. When I look at the original question. Many answers could serve as an great answers. A new person to this sport would have questions of all kinds. I highly doubt if it is possible to get off topic with this topic.

Thanks for everything you do.
